Windows Phone Apollo rumoured for a mid-June 2012 launch

DGui, a Nokia blog, has some news from Finland. They spoke to an ?industry insider? who revealed some of Microsoft?s upcoming Windows Phone 7 roadmap

According to his source Windows Phone Tango will be announced and released at CES on the 13th January 2012, where it will be shown on the Nokia Lumia 719 & Lumia 900. The update will then roll-out to existing devices over the following months.

The update will support LTE, but also smaller screen sizes and smaller chassis sizes. More interesting is the information that Windows Phone 8, AKA Apollo will launch much earlier than expected, in mid-June 2012.

Hm... Sounds nice. Are we sure they're not talking about Tango though? It seems quite surprising that Apollo would be coming out that early. Not that I'm complaining or anything. lol

CES will be big for Nokia, that we know for sure. Also that Tango is the next update, that's also pretty much a sure thing. Add to this the newer 8000 builds we've been seeing every now and then for the past 3-4 months, and that LTE is the next big feature coming, it starts to fit when you think about it. Remember that Mnago RTMed a good deal before it actually started going out in late September to phones. This means tango has been in the works probably before manga even RTMed (if MS branched it off which is how they tend to do things).

Thus a Tango release in late January or February so we can get Nokia (and maybe other) LTE phones in the US makes sense to me, remember Tango is suppose to be a minor update so it shouldn't have a long release cycle compared to Mango. If they've been working on it from September when they wrapped up Mango then that's 4-5 months for a minor update, something that's very doable in my opinion.

Then the rumor of Apollo for mid-June would be another 4-5 months, maybe add another month for testing by carriers etc, so more or less a ~6 month development cycle for WP updates fits well (this being internal dev time at MS, who knows what OEM and carriers could add to that time which is the real unknown factor.)

DLNA is part of the OS but OEMs have access to the API for it, LG made a app and I think either samsung or htc has one as well now? It's basically up to the OEM to support unless that's changed with Mango but I don't believe so.

As for 720p and HDMI out, maybe, dunno. The rumor says that Tango will bring support for smaller screens actually, not higher res ones, but we don't have anything official yet, just rumors.

I think we'll be able to update to it with current phones but I also expect new phones with it as well, heck every major update should bring new phones with it, maybe even minor ones like tango since it's suppose to bring LTE support with it.
