iPad 3 Said to Have High-Def Screen, LTE

Recommended Posts

Apple Inc. (AAPL)?s next iPad, expected to go on sale in March, will sport a high-definition screen, run a faster processor and work with next-generation wireless networks, according to three people familiar with the product.

The company?s manufacturing partners in Asia started ramping up production of the iPad 3 this month and plan to reach full volumes by February, said one of the people, who asked not to be named because the details aren?t public. The tablet will use a quad-core chip, an enhancement that lets users jump more quickly between applications, two of the people said.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook is counting on the new model to ward off mounting competition in a market that Apple pioneered two years ago. After its debut in 2010, the iPad emerged as the company?s second-biggest source of revenue --after the iPhone -- and inspired rival products from Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Samsung (005930) Electronics Co. Apple has sold more than 40 million iPads, generating at least $25.3 billion in sales.

Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Apple, said the company doesn?t comment on rumor and speculation.

The Cupertino, California-based company has been working on making the iPad compatible with a wireless standard called long-term evolution, or LTE, said one of the people. Carriers such asVerizon Wireless (VZ) and ATT Inc. (T) are rolling out LTE networks to give users faster access to data.

LTE Networks

Smartphone makers, including Samsung, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI) and Nokia Oyj (NOKIA), have already introduced smartphones that work on the faster networks. Apple is bringing LTE to the iPad before the iPhone because the tablet has a bigger battery and can better support the power requirements of the newer technology, said one of the people.

The new display is capable of greater resolution than the current iPad, with more pixels on its screen than some high-definition televisions, the person said. The pixels are small enough to make the images look like printed material, according to the person. Videos begin playing almost instantly because of the additional graphics processing, the person said.

The new iPad is being assembled by Apple?s main manufacturing partner, Foxconn Technology Group. Like most technology companies, Apple contracts with companies in Asia for labor to assemble its devices. Foxconn, which also builds the iPhone and other Apple products, gets about 22 percent of its sales from Apple, according to supply-chain data compiled by Bloomberg.

Boosting Production

Mass production began at the start of this month, with factories running 24 hours a day in China, one of the people said. Manufacturing will halt over China?s Lunar New Year holiday this month and then ramp back up to a peak in February, the person said.

The introduction of the new iPad will be Apple?s first major hardware release since the death of company co-founderSteve Jobs in October. The company is hosting an education event focused on electronic textbooks next week that won?t include any hardware introductions, said a person familiar with the matter.

Apple, the world?s largest technology company by market value, was little changed yesterday in U.S. trading at $419.81. The stock rose 26 percent in 2011, marking its third straight year of gains.

Its not dreaming.

I was judging by the lines of article.

And there have been reports earlier too that a high res display is indeed gonna come out

all the reports said the iPad 2 was going to have Retna, or higher rez screen.... it had a Camera

Agreed. They'll probably tout some new features in iOS 6 and then bring across a new hardware revision with say, one major new feature and then small tweaks alongside it.

Although, I could be wrong if they wanted a product to celebrate Steve Jobs.

The "enhancement that lets users jump more quickly between applications" could be four finger swipe up to see the task menu, and swipe left/right to change though apps.

I can't imagine Apple jumping on board the LTE bandwagon at this stage, Soon enough 4G networks will be rolled out (I think there's testing going on currently), and LTE will be superseded. And while an LTE phone might still work on a 4G network, it won't offer the same speed as a real 4G device would.

In 3 years, they will have batteries that last 24 hours long.

While I'm masturbating to a 1080p subtitled(!) porn stream and listening to the sountrack of Scarface in Apple Lossless and synchronizing 32 e-mail accounts and taking the trouble to reply to some e-mails with attached data. All this while dealing the concurency overhead of a quad-core.

Keep dreaming. It's too high of a jump from the current 1024x768.

it will likely be 2048x1536, that way with double the resolution it will be easier for app developers to change their apps, this is what they did with retina in iphone 4.

you mean LTE Advanced

that still around 2-3 years away for standard. ops checked the wiki it say it has been standard has been frozen since april 2011

the roll up is slow worldwide for LTE as it is

never mind LTE ADV network ...

the performance is just out of the world , hopefully telco's rise/raise FUP allowance

In 3 years, they will have batteries that last 24 hours long. Also quad core processors. Take my word. Trust me.

Quad core processors? Sure.

24 hour battery life? Unless they make a breakthrough with batteries within gadgets and then bring them to mass production, I can't see it happening, purely because as we get more powerful hardware within our handsets, they're going to suck up power like no tomorrow.

They sure will. Count on it being done.

Yes, LTE-Advanced is what proper 4G networks will be using. LTE on the other hand is a 3G tech, so I don't think it makes much sense to start rolling out LTE now, when LTE-Advanced tech is being released too.
