Max Payne 3 release pushed back again, to May 2012

Max Payne 3's release has been delayed to May of this year from its targeted release date of March, Take Two Interactive announced today. According to a statement, the publisher is pushing the release date to ensure the game "delivers the highest quality, groundbreaking entertainment experience."

Rockstar Games originally announced that it was working on Max Payne 3 in March 2009, and the company was targeting a Winter 2009 release. Multiple releases were eventually sandwiched in between the game's announcement and its now-imminent release over three years later, including L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption.

In the third installment of the series, Max Payne now works as security for a wealthy man named Rodrigo Branco in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Branco's wife is kidnapped, pulling Payne into "a conspiracy of shadowy, warring factions."

Since the game's release date has been pushed yet again, Take Two is now reporting a fiscal loss for the 21012 year, which ends in March, of $210 million to $230 million. With its release in fiscal year 2013, Max Payne 3 will be launched closer to other Take Two titles including XCOM, BioShock Infinite, and Borderlands 2.

The official release dates for Max Payne 3 in North America are May 15 for Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 and May 29 for PC; internationally, the game launches May 18 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and June 1 for PC.

Personally I think they're trying to sweep this one under the carpet if they're trying to compete with more of their own games. You'd think they'd spread them out to increase sales. Very few people buy 2 or more games so close to each other.

Completely take back what I said above. Got an email today from Rockstar with another making of video showcasing the design and technology behind Max Payne 3, this one focusing on targeting and weapons, and looks bad ass.

I still have faith that this game will be good because Rockstar rarely pushes out a bad game, and certainly their last few releases (LA Noire, Red Dead Redemption) have been fantastic. They probably have legitimate and positive reasons for a delay and I think the final product will only be made better by the development team spending more time

thanks a lot for posting that tech video, Larry. totally sold me on this game, but then i was sold on it to begin with. this is 100% Max Payne, we're even getting a flashback level it seems. looks very good and can't wait. will be getting the PC version even if it means waiting a month longer, which is fine.

I can't remember if i played Max Payne 2 but i know I loved the first one. I'll definitely be getting this one as it looks good. I definitely miss run-and-gun games sometimes vs stop and pop. LOL. I use to love stealth games but now finding them too slow! I wanna shoot shoot shoot, reload and shoot some more!

EDIT - Oh yeah - checked and saw that it came out in 2003 and I saw some videos and remmeber it now. Dang it's been that long?!

No problem at all. Glad someone is sharing my enthusiasm for the game. For some reason I thought I read they were not doing a PC release, and I remember thinking to myself how dare they do that when the series started out on PC, so now that I hear it will be released for the PC, I may strongly have to consider playing it on the PC as well. (Y)

I wasn't sold with screens but this keeps looking better and better in videos. Has that sort of leap you always expected of next gen in movement and physics. Looks fun too.

Yeah, something more free flowing rather than chest high walls is very welcome.

good call Larry, this game has PC written all over it, not just because this is a PC-based series, but because we need to send a strong message to both Microsoft and Sony that their tardiness will not be rewarded.

    • In addition to the "sidebar app list" and "Collections" features, Microsoft will also deprecate the "Drop" feature. Before you publish this news and credit another site, here is the original source: https://x.com/i/status/2067838711870439583 .
    • Looks like the 7.1 is fake effects, can it at least do real 5.1? It says 'virtual 7.1' in all descriptions.
    • You can't, if you didn't notice, it doesn't support surround at all, it's right in the spec list.
    • Hi — I’m always interested in soundcards. Like displays, I just want to know I’m getting as much clean “sonic juice” into my brain as possible as the years take their toll. I’m not entirely sure what to take away from this review, though. It doesn’t really tell me whether the AE‑X is a good product or who it’s actually for. Most of what I’m getting is: there’s a driver to install, here’s what it looks like, and here’s what’s in the box. There’s a lot of emphasis on the SPDIF input. When you mention not needing to switch headphones between console and PC — does that mean the PC has to be powered on just to pass audio through? That seems like a fairly big waste of energy. Is this more something a streamer would use alongside a capture card? How are you testing the sound? (Also, you might want to clarify that you’re using the headphones in wired mode when you mention they’re wireless.) You mention the lack of EMI shielding — how much real‑world difference does that make compared with typical motherboard audio? On multi‑channel: what exactly isn’t supported? Does this mean Windows spatial audio (Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X, etc.) won’t work, or just that the card itself doesn’t decode surround formats? And are there any true multi‑driver “surround” headphones left that would even use that? You also highlight support for high‑impedance headphones — but what does that translate to in practice? How does it compare to driving the same headphones from a normal device, and does it make any difference for everyday, lower‑impedance models? In short, who is this card actually targeted at?
