still1
We?ve known since the Fire first debuted that it would create some competition for Apple?s iPad, which has dominated the market since it arrived. But today iSuppli has offered up a little insight into just how fierce the competition really is. According to the research firm, Apple?s market share in the tablet arena dropped from 64 percent in Q3 to 57 percent in Q4, with Amazon nabbing a 14 percent share. It would seem as though that $200 price tag on the Kindle Fire was temptation enough for tablet buyers, but according to IHS research Apple customers were more swayed away from the iPad by the iPhone 4S than they were the Fire. Including Christmas sales, Apple shipped at least 15.4 million iPads while Amazon had shipped 3.9 million Fires. It?s important to note that shipments are a very different number than sales, but with both of these products selling well we wouldn?t consider these numbers misleading by any means. iSuppli projects that the iPad 3, which will most certainly be the superior device, will help Apple recapture any market share it lost over the past few months, but with such a gap between price points, anything can happen. http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/16/amazon-steals-14-tablet-market-share-in-q4-apple-share-drops-to-57/
FMH
No wonder we are getting so many rumors of a smaller iPad. Fire is a serious contender, because of featuring 24-hours on one of the most visited websites of all time.

Even if Apple makes one. 9.7 inch is the perfect size. Almost the same size as a A4 paper. I'm glad somebody's finally giving Apple some fair competition in the tablet space. It just means we'll get better iPads in the future. (Y)

Actually, I'm pretty convinced it was a combination of the media coverage, very low price point, and the Amazon brand that made the Kindle Fire sell well. The hardware itself isn't very hot. The hardware itself isn't very hot. I thought that the hardware specs were quite high quality. Both the iPad and Fire have 1GHz dual-core. The Kindle Fire has screen resolution of 1024x600, while iPad's is 1024x768. Nearly identical! But because of smaller display size, Kindle Fire has higher PPI. The RAM is exactly the same in both, 512 MB. But the points you mentioned; about media coverage, very low price point, and the Amazon brand; are also very true. shifts
Id like to see some web stats from sites like neowin. Can we see how the page views from the Amazon Kindle Fire are compared to the iPad. By this articles reasoning the iPad should be on a decline and the Fire being on the up? Fire is a serious contender, because of featuring 24-hours on one of the most visited websites of all time. Not for 2012. there have been leaks of the back section of the ipad 3 and it's the same size. it's 1mm thicker too. Hopefully better iPads in the future, but i wouldnt count on it. What do you mean better iPads in the future? iPads are currently the best tablet around. Of course they're going to be better.

Most of the rumors point to it being in an 'internal testing phase'.

techbeck
Seriously? We sure as hell would see improved iPads in the future. Don't see, why not. Apple has not been to worried about competition and improving their products based on that. Its not enough of threat ATM. They are suing and that is their thing right now. What do you mean better iPads in the future? iPads are currently the best tablet around. Of course they're going to be better. Matter of opinion. And just because something is the best selling, doesnt make it the best.
nominak
What that mean is this statement you made is your opinion and that comment is his/her opinion. It's not really an opinion when it has the best apps and is the best selling. That would make it a fact.
Astra.Xtreme
Matter of opinion. And just because something is the best selling, doesnt make it the best. Obviously it's an opinion, but it's not really wrong. Some people probably think that a Chrysler is the best vehicle brand in the world, but obviously we all know that's wrong. If somebody with no background knowledge of tablets asks what the best one on the market is (without price mattering), the obvious answer is the iPad. The numbers and marketshare all support it. The Kindle Fire was released in Q4 and with Christmas included, obviously there was a huge spike in sales. When the iPad 3 is released, it will also have huge numbers, but it doesn't really mean anything. These numbers for the Fire will probably drop drastically during this quarter. techbeck
It's not really an opinion when it has the best apps and is the best selling. That would make it a fact. No, it would make it an opinion and dependent on what the users uses the product form. Ford had a number of best selling cars last year but they are not the best car out there. Astra.Xtreme
The size of the fire isnt it's selling point, its the price tagg. $199 or $499+ for something very similar. hmm I bet you in a few years amazon will be ahead of Apple in the app and other online markets. How are they similar? I don't think there is a single thing better on the Fire besides the price. And I'm not saying that because I have anything against the Fire, but it's a perfect example of "You get what you pay for".

The numbers and marketshare all support it. And that person obviously didn't do their research. Or it may be the best on the market for them and what they use the device for. Its all subjective and dependent on the user's needs. Its like saying PCs are better than Macs because PCs sell more and are the most popular. I know a lot of people who would disagree with this. It is your opinion that its the best but not for others!!!! whenever you have to say Bad/Good/Best. its an opinion.
Astra.Xtreme
Similar because they are a mobile device. Most normal people just want to listen to music, surf the web, and watch movies. check check check. Normal people see the price difference, and see that they can do what they want, and will chose what makes more sense to them, which they apparently already have started doing. I really don't think the price justifies what you can do on an ipad, especially when there are tablets out there for much cheaper that CAN do the same and more than it. And a Nintendo DS can do all of those things too, but it doesn't make it similar. The Fire has a small display, buggy OS, and a long list of annoyances, but that all comes along with the cheap price. The iPad does all these things better and can be used in a business environment. And I doubt that most people only listen to music, surf, and watch movies. There is an App Store filled with millions of games and apps that push it far ahead of what the Fire could ever do. Considering how limited the Fire is, spending the extra $300 is money well spent, hence why it dominates the market.
Astra.Xtreme
and why its losing shares at a steady rate, and will continue to do so. (that is what this article is about, if you havent noticed...) as i said, normal people don't know, or care about the rest, and with the economy the way it is, they don't want to pay $500 for at limited tablet. yes, the Ipad in itself is very limited. It lost market share because the Fire sold a lot due to Christmas and it's release during that time. The iPad has been out for quite a while, so most people that want one, already have one. When the 3 comes out, their market share will surge even higher. Simple economics.

I know a lot of people and see a lot of people buying the Fire/Kindle/Nook cheap and then hacking the crap out of it to do more with it for free. Yea, not everyone does this but a lot does. And I also know a lot of people who only do the basic things with a phone/tablet. With Android, you get a device at a decent price and for what you need it for. With Apple, you have limited selections and may be buying an expensive product that does a ton more that you will never do. Which, IMO, is a waste of money. A lot of people also buy Apple products because of status or popularity. iPad's market share is getting eaten away a lot by Android. I believe Android total had 30 or so percent of the market in tabs last year and its continuing to grow. blank 1 Share
