My iPod is stolen, tell me if this method can help me get it back

Yes, someone stole my iPod Touch. So basically, in order for the thief to use it.. they would have to plug it into the computer, right? Once they plug it in to iTunes.. does the serial number of the iPod get sent to Apple? If so, then Apple will know where my iPod Touch was used last.. I'm assuming the ip address of that computer also gets sent to Apple.

So yeah, once the thief plugs it into his computer... isn't it just a matter of finding out who owns that computer?

Oh Of course, they are going to spend all this time and man-hours, side-step laws, throw out possible ethics violations all for you and your $100 iPod.

Please tell me you're only 12 & watch too much TV

As the poster above me says, even if Apple does know the IP address of every computer that every iPod has been connected to (and, to be honest, I doubt they do), I seriously doubt they'd hand that information over to someone phoning up and claiming someone stole their device.

Next time, enable Find my iDevice.

Obviously I won't ask for the information myself.. but I'm pretty sure they will have to give it to the police if the police asked, right?

If they get the information for the device, maybe police can ask for it.

Or maybe not?

That's what I'm trying to find out here. If I file a police report.. isn't as simple as asking Apple for the ip address of the computer that used my iPod last? They have to give it to the police.. and once the police gets the ip address.. they can figure out where the thief lives.. right?

Your iPod is gone I'm afraid. The police don't have the resources to apply this amount of effort/cost for a small theft (no offense). Could I ask how it was stolen though?

If it was an iPhone device you can report the IMEI number to your provider who will put a block on it.

One other thing, the police will probably ask you to provide a serial number of the item. That would be helpful in case it's identified anywhere. You can find it on the box or by calling Apple (I don't think iTunes holds this information directly).

Actually yes, if provided easy info like location of the idevice, if you had given them access to your "find my idevice" thing, they will see where your device is and possibly lead to more items being recovered than just your ipod. Here are a few good stories from around my area:

Again, no I did not have "find my idevice" enabled. My question is basically.. if the police can locate the computer that the theif used to sync my iPod. When they sync it... doesn't it send the ip address and the serial number of my iPod to Apple? I'm NOT saying they will help me do this.. my question is basically.. is it possible..? I doubt they will help me..

I have to say, it is extremely unlikely that Apple would release that kind of info without a court warrent. And it is extremely unlikely if the police have little to follow that they would help much. Their use of resources would extend the cost of your ipod. Which is why, we suggest, next time enable any tracking feature.

I'm sorry but your ipod is gone. Are you still able to login to your itunes? Then get a new ipod and import your backup onto it. Yes I know it costs money for a new ipod.

Everyone lose things in their lifetime, I lost my first mobile, luckiliy it was a cheap pre-paid phone so I'm not worried one bit.

you could phone up apple and say "I would like to buy a new ipod please" ... but on this topic my sister iphone got stolen she has the cloud thingy.... what needs to be done now? "finding" it to the round about location is one thing but the exact will be hard ? im not used to Iphone cloudy thingy... I use lookout

yea they are not going to find or even come close to handing IP info over to you, or a police officer

it will only be released to a Judge/Court. the amount of money you would pay to get a judge to do it, you could pay for a new ipod. and thats even IF they save the IP info. which is highly unlikely, there is no use to save that stuff as they are not an Internet Provider. and the Sync gives a rats ass about the SN of the device, only if there is another library attached to it. the only thing it takes the I and checks if there is an update for that Product Line.

ALSO, find my iDevice wont be close to accurate for a Non Celular Device. because it is not able to use Cell Towers to pinpoint location data and it doesnt have GPS.

your crap is gone dude, should have kept ahold of it

literally the only thing you " COULD " have done with Find my iPhone / iPad, is send a message to it along lines of " You have won 10 Free movie rentals / gift certificate to whatever popular place. Please Call " insert your number " and give the operator your address to receive the prize " and see if the idiot does

actually, police can't locate your ipod without enabled "find my idevice"
