Android Market app size upped to 4GB from 50MB limit

Tired of quickly snagging a game only to learn you still have another 200MB (or worse) to go in a separate download? Following through on

a promise made at its 2011 developer conference, Google's just made the Android Market a whole lot more friendly to oversized applications, upping the maximum file size from 50 megabytes to 4 gigabytes -- a 7,900 percent increase.

Most Android apps are far smaller than even the previous 50MB limit, though, so there's a good chance you'll never notice the difference. For more intensive applications -- 3D games, for example -- the extra downloads will be able to come from Google's servers, which is good for devs. Users won't actually have to (or be able to, for that matter) download a full 4 gigabytes in one sitting, as the extra downloads will be broken up into 2GB chunks, but the total size will be reflected in the Android Market.

The updated code is available now in the Android SDK Manager, so look for this to start hitting the Market any day.

4GB size for an App on a mobile platform seems very ... I don't have words for it!

I can imagine some apps (e.g. Audio/Video related) might require a lot of space but at 4 GB, the app better be worth it!

There was a 50MB limit?! Wow.

WP7 have 10 MB limit but with Tango it will be up to 256MB... Most apps wont go beyond 50MB.. its a phone app not some ps3 or xbox games/apps..

and apps can always download in app download for additional MB

Many games will download a gig+ of data.

Suddenly that 16 or 32GB of on-board storage on phones without MicroSD slots seems rather small! :(

10MB is borderline impossible to work with :/ And I thought it was hard to work with Apple's 3G 20MB limit (wifi is unlimited)

No it does not.

  • Section 2.5: The OTA (over the air) installation file for the application may not exceed 20 MB. Applications in excess of that size will be downloaded via Wi-Fi or through a tethered connection to a PC running the appropriate Microsoft software.
  • Section 4.1.1: The maximum size of the XAP package file is 225 MB.
  • Section 2.8: If your application requires the download of a large additional data package (e.g. >50 MB) to enable the application to run as described, the application description must disclose the approximate size of the data package and that additional charges may apply depending on connectivity used to acquire data.

Been that way since the start.

where is the 20MB limit on the policy? because i dont see 20Mb limit on section 2.5

the 20MB size limit is not the app size limit its the limit to download via 3G(if wifi this limit dont apply) for downloading additional data after an app is downloaded by market... app size is still lower.

you have no clue.. you seem like you just copy pasted it from some website...

Well it seems Microsoft have reorganized stuff (I got that from the PDF)

XAP File size: http://msdn.microsof...4(v=vs.92).aspx 4.1.1 - 225mb (It's been that way for god knows how long now).\

And further proof of the file size limit, when you try to upload a file to the marketplace:

And if that proof still isn't enough for you: http://www.windowsph...f5-f39a36c853ee

Scroll down to where it says download size: 164mb.

No idea where the Over the Air thing is listed but its there, you simply can't download an app larger than 20mb when on 3G. Marketplace will pop up an error saying please enable wi-fi or use Zune to download the app. This DOESN'T mean your app has to be 20mb or less, it just means the app will require Wi-Fi / Zune to download. That's it.

Good, maybe this will help games like Sonic SD to download properly/quicker. Damn thing takes forever now since an addition 200 or so mb is required but the connection is so **** poor.

This won't effect many day to day apps. So unless you plan on stacking your phone full of games the 32GB onboard memory should still suffice, if not then Dropbox and UbuntuOne on Android now offer instant uploading of photos to cloud storage, meaning that once you've done that you can start trimming down your photo albums on the phone too.

What are you talking about your the one with no clue. Ya dont even need to see the 2.5 terms and conditions or whatever cus anything upto 20MB on the market place can be downloaded OTA (3G 4G wap you get the idea). Anything over 20MB specifically states on the app details that it requires wifi or to be connected with a computer to downloaded. Same as iOS that has a 20MB limit for OTA transfer as well.

Also funny how it started out as an android article then got on to wp7 within a few posts and the wp7 bashing begins
