8-year-old Tennessee boy uses tracking app after break-in

FRANKLIN (AP) ? Authorities say an 8-year-old boy used a tracking app on his iPad to lead deputies to the stolen device after a break-in at the family home in Tennessee.

The Tennessean reports that a suspect broke into the family home of 8-year-old Landon Crabtree on March 12 in Manchester and took two iPads, a computer, other electronics and a hedge trimmer.

Authorities say Crabtree used the tracking app to lead deputies to a motel about 4 miles away, where they reported they took 46-year-old John Docherty into custody a half hour later.

A Franklin detective watching TV news coverage of Docherty's arrest realized he was a person described by a witness in a theft at the Carrington Hills apartments there, authorities said. Officials say hundreds of items stolen from the Crabtree home, the apartments and as far away as Virginia and Florida were found in the man's motel room.

Recovered items included guns, cameras, jewelry, guitars and various electronics, they said.

Sgt. Danny Ferrell told The Tullahoma News that deputies are entering the items in a national crime computer to determine what has been reported stolen.

Landon Crabtree's father, Richard Crabtree, said deputies praised the boy for his ingenuity.

"They all shook his hand and asked him how he had done it," Richard Crabtree said. " ... I never thought my 8-year-old would figure out how to download it and come down and tell me this is where our stuff is."

Docherty was jailed in Coffee County on $600,000 bond ? $100,000 for a charge of aggravated burglary and $500,000 for a fugitive from justice warrant from Florida for theft, according to authorities.

Jail officials did not know whether he had an attorney.
