What online game should I buy

Recommended Posts

Thinking of buying an online game tomorrow, haven't really got into one since bad company 2 and before that WoW when it first came out.

Now tossing up if I should buy The Old Republic or not. I don't really feel like playing BF3 yet because i pretty much got completely sick of bc2/fps's a couple of months back and feel like something new.

I've read old republic can get boring end game, but realisticly i will not be putting more than maybe 120+ hours into it because no matter the game I always get bored with it. Any Neowin people here still playing it and would recomend?

I'm also open to any other recomendations for online games from anyone here. And if enough people say BF3 then I might have to go with that....

I think the old republic just got a patch or is about to get one which is adding a heap more stuff. Let me find a link .......

Don't really play MMOs, so I can't tell you whether it sucks or not. But I thought this bit of info might help your decision :)

An MMO and an FPS are quite fundamentally different so usually it's a toss up between games inside each genre than assistance to help choose which one to go for. I play both but all MMO's are just terrible after a few levels, more of the same quests in different settings blah blah blah. All of them bore me very quickly. Human opponent with freelook for the win :)

I suggest Tribes Asend for your FPS, that's a tough to get used to but the best for CTF and you can pull off some quite satisfying feats. It's also free to play and no reason to spend cash unless you want to upgrade quicker.

GW2 pre-purchase comes out tomorrow. Could buy that gets you beta access (which will start near the end of the month).

Path of Exile basically a diablo 2/3 clone, can pay 10$ and get into the closed beta which is going on now.

RIFT a great MMORPG

I've heard SWTOR was a huge let down, was over hyped and failed to deliver. I have not played it, nor do I intend to but that's what I heard.

I'm a current SWTOR player and I love it. I'm not sure why people were let down. It rewards the player for making alts which I suppose might be why some might not like it. I'm an alt-a-holic so it's been great for me. The only thing in it that's not good would be the pvp, which currently is horrible. That aside, the pve experience is amazing. Well, if you're a Star Wars fan that is. Tried Star Trek Online, THAT was a huge let down!

I'm fairly psyched about Guild Wars 2, can't wait for that one!

The Secret World was one I was very excited about until I saw their pricing scheme! Then I watched some of the gameplay from this past PAX, and I can just see it going free to play in the future. Plus every game that's offered a lifetime subscription for $200 is now free to play. I consider those being offered a HUGE sign. The developer knows it won't last as a sub based game, so they're trying to make as much as they can up front. Sad really, TSW has an awesome setting and story too.

I also think the upcoming TERA will become a free to play title as well. It plays good, and the graphics are amazing, but it just feels very Aion-ish to me. And that one's free now too!

I think the future of Online titles will end up being free to download and play, but with cash shops. That model is just making WAY too much right now for a lot of companies to not be copied. WoW is even a sub with a cash shop! Look at the new mount they just released. Anytime they need some money they just have to sell a new mount for $25 and cash in.

I also am rather interested in the upcoming new Neverwinter, it will be free to download and free to play. It's currently slated for a Q4 2012 release though. So that's some time away, but at least this year.

theyeve also just ended their 2nd or 3rd free weekend. keep an eye out for the next one (2-3 in the space of 5 weeks)

Tell ya what, I am in the same boat as you. I beta tested and pre-ordered The Old Republic, but once it came out I last a month and got bored with it. I am looking for a good MMO and FPS myself.

I would LOVE to play the new Counter Strike Global Ops for my FPS fix, but need someone to give me a key. You can invite your friends to it by giving them the key.

As far as my MMO fix, I installed Aion this weekend due to it going completely Free this Wednesday. Its not a bad game at all, I mean definitely not my favorite but its different and cool, and the F2P model makes it even more attractive. Check out there site talking about it.

While I do have to admit to being a little bored in SWTOR now, I still love it personally.

Beta tested and played Aion at launch for a while, it became far too grind based for me after a certain point. I feel the same might occur in Tera.

I've had enough grind game play from the first EverQuest.

Currently enjoying a little DC Universe Online since it's free now too. It's nice and different. Also very impressed with my time in FireFall. I like it better than Tribes, and it's planned to be free as well. That's always a plus.

Beta'd the first Guild Wars, and played the devil out of it at launch. Just never picked up any of the expansions. I can't wait for GW2!

Personally, not a fan of WoW anymore. I also don't care for Ghostcrawler, or whatever he wants to call himself. Their last expansion killed it for me, and since I have broken that habit.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I actually did play Guild Wars for a few weeks when it released years ago and liked it.

I decided to go with the old republic. I was a huge fan of the knights of the old republic games and even if I get 20 hours of enjoyment out of this one then that will do it for me. I'm sure ill be ready for BF3 in a week or two anyway.

OH WHAT THE **** GUILD WARS 2 COMES OUT TODAY! ****! I JUST BROUGHT THE OLD REPUBLIC. I THOUGHT IT WAS MONTHS AWAY. Oh well, stupid me.....

Nein, people will just be able to pre-purchase it tomorrow. Release date still hasn't been set. Pre-purchase is just for some goody items and access to beta events prior to release. You'll have time for SW:ToR, little time I presume, as it only holds your attention for maybe a month. It'll be a fun month though, but don't expect it to hold you over until GW2 release, if it isn't coming sooner than June. Once you hit 50 and play around for a week or two, unless you really love alts, and doing the same planets, you'll be bored again.

Oh phew, I had just glanced at their site and saw the words "available april 10th" and though **** im blowin it!

These days now that I can actually afford games etc. and have lees time to play them I worry alot more about how much enjoyment I get outa them then how long I can play them for. Kid Icarus Uprising is actuall ykinda freaking me out because it's so awesome that I want to 100% but there just SO MUCH stuff to do I know it'll never be possible. It's insane!

I wouldn't know on that. If the game doesn't have to be online though, might I suggest KoA: Reckoning, or The Witcher then move to The Witcher 2.

Or try RIFT. I had a blast when I played it. Especially if you were into WoW, but once again, not a game that held my attention at max level. But there is plenty to do, I just didn't bother. It is far more a completele game than SW:ToR though. Depends on what you are looking for I guess. (Both games have unique-ish leveling. SW:ToR has voice acting...and is Star Wars. RIFT is fantasy, albeit being a huge Star Wars fan, I prefer the fantasy genre when it comes to [MMO] RPGS in general. I'd go with RIFT if I were you, having played both and hit max on both and spent some time there, I got more from RIFT. My Star Wars fanboy side hates saying that, but my gamer side agrees.)

Just thought I'd add, before this thread dies, Witcher and Witcher II are two of the best games of all time IMO. If you haven't played yet, your blown it

    • You do you, I've just said that it first appeared in "home" version before it will be available in "work" one. I use Edge only because it still supports MV2 uBO extension even on Android - I'll switch when they stop.
    • I imagine that was a review or something? My reviews mostly contain a lot of images and galleries, but these are all webp too, but yeah it all adds up on the page load. Would help if you were more helpful with your critique instead of bitching and moaning like a Karen 😂 Because then we might be able to fix it for you.
    • If Valve refused to let them make the case, I wonder if they've already partnered with someone else to do it? The fact that they didn't seek permission/licence before diving straight in is incredible though
    • OpenClaw now has native mobile apps on iOS and Android by Karthik Mudaliar OpenClaw, the viral open-source personal AI agent, now has its own mobile app, available on both Android and iOS. Users can pair the app with an existing OpenClaw gateway and can start using new mobile-native features that are now available on the app. The app supports all the existing features you'd already have seen on OpenClaw's TUI, as well as some more, such as real-time and background Talk mode, action approvals, sharing from iOS, and optional access to device capabilities such as camera, screen, location, photos, contacts, calendar, and reminders. These features are available on both the Android and iOS versions of the app. What's important with these apps is that they don't run OpenClaw on your phone, but are actually just companion apps that require a running OpenClaw Gateway on an existing device, on macOS, Linux, or Windows via WSL2. To pair the app with your existing OpenClaw gateway, users need to run the command "/pair qr" on the TUI or existing chat interface, which brings up a QR code. Users can then scan this QR code to pair it up with the mobile app. There's also an option to manually pair the app by entering the host and a port. Previously, OpenClaw had been available on phones via WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, and others. Now, with a native mobile app, the interface is much cleaner and more focused on just the OpenClaw, of course, with the added support for camera, screen, location, and more. It's important to note that OpenClaw comes with its own security warnings. There's always a chance of prompt injection with these tools, so users are recommended to double-check authentication, tool policy, sandboxing, and execution approvals rather than prompts alone. For users well-versed with the AI harness, a native mobile app makes it easier to approve an automation, share a link, use voice, or let an agent react to phone-side context.
