I'm not on Windows 8 atm but did you check advanced system settings to see if you can enable drop shadow? On Windows 7 it's enabled by default and I have disabled it manually.

What Relativity meant is in-active windows. Only the single active window have the shadows.

I honestly can't believe that a company of such size of MS can produce such utter cr$p (N). where are their proper UI designers ? , where is the flow ? , the integration ? ...... it's like MS will never learn from their mistakes, because i'm sorry but the changes to the 'new' aero revision looks like a retard designed it :/

There's only 1 UI designer team and they work only on MS office. j/k

A number of people moan about Aero not looking right yet I don't see anyone giving details of what and how to change it. Other than bigger title bars which, as has been pointed out already, is probably so people with touch devices can actually work with them better. I think they're heading in the right direction and cleaning up the UI from Win7s version.

If people really don't like Aero as is, or will be by RTM, it's still able to be tweaked and themed. That's not going to change in Win8, though who knows for Win9.

I don't get why they are sticking with Aero on desktop.

The Office UI has so much potential!.. it can merge the Metro part with the desktop. I love the UI of the new Visual Studio ? Those screens that show nice flat boxes with accents. Whoever says they don't have time for that (if a company as big as MS don't have time to dual test another VS then who has?)

Im not talking about a new approach to desktop. Im just talking about dressing it all up in that kind of graphics. I am still hoping somewhere we get two themes when it releases. One is Aero the other is the Visual Studio kind..

oh and about Metro. Metro dies when u step from WP7 to W8.

They are hardly following their own set principles! I see gradients (I see strokes too). I see glows! I see so much that should not be there (im talking about the metro side of windows 8 btw).

A more metro version of the desktop is in the works I just don't know how far MS wants to take it in Win8. It could take time and maybe SP1 or even Win9 before they do more on the desktop side. I'm thinking that the start screen is a big enough change for now, in their opinion, so they don't want to totally do it all in one go so everyone doesn't freak out. Once they get use to the start screen and metro in general we'll see the desktop following behind.

Yes, I've noticed that too. But I guess it's to cater their large user-base with pretty graphics and to soften the transition.

It works for Windows 8. But I'm fearful of Windows Phone 8 and the Xbox NEXT having the same general interface as Windows 8 Metro skin.

(Which is doable considering soon to be shared codebase)

Thankfully all the engineering software will not go metro (with so much limitations they simply would not work) in fact, I'm pretty sure that Windows 7 will become the next XP, now, I'm pretty sure that the software will give compatibility to windows 8 but no metro mode, with a proper (non metro) start menu replacement and a way to disable the metro start screen it will be a fully featured Windows 7+ which is the ideal environment for working.

Windows 8 can do the same thing as 7 except more and faster.

Looks like you are thinking that metro is supposed to replace the desktop, which isn't the case.

many of the "engineering software" can definitely learn something from "Metro". They adopted ribbon (e.g. AutoCAD)...you never know.

Also exiting "Explorer.exe" closes metro too! One thing i don't really like (though i am very late to say) is that Desktop App can be closed like a Metro app, which is so wrong! If you like play some youtube video on a browser in Desktop app , and then close Desktop app , it would still be running in behind and not actually close , further as i told , closing explorer.exe kills Metro screen too, metro is not something separate clearly its just a replacement to start menu which used to be disabled (the entire taskbar actually) whenever you close explorer.exe . So again it feels like Desktop app is central and Metro is running inside it (obviously). Thats why i dont want desktop app to be closed just like metro app...

    • I like Tidal, but it still does not control devices from the mobile/app and still no surround support. And yeah re: above comment I still get a lot of network errors and I am on a 4/4 Gbit Fiber connection.
    • Aren`t "security features" and "AI model that can see your screen" a tad diametric!
    • Samsung, Amazon extend 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD deal beyond Prime Day 2026 by Sayan Sen Recently, we had Amazon's Prime Day 2026 sales wherein there were several great deals including on SSDs. One of those discounted components was the Samsung 990 PRO SSD as the 2TB variant of it was selling for $370, a very good price after a long time. Although that deal was supposed to expire today, Amazon has now extended that sale further (purchase link under the specs table down below). The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $400. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more. The technical specs of the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB are given in the table below: Specification Value Form Factor M.2 2280 Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 NAND Flash Samsung V-NAND TLC Controller Samsung In-house Controller Cache Memory Samsung 2GB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM Sequential Read Speed Up to 7,450 MB/s Sequential Write Speed Up to 6,900 MB/s Random Read (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,400,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,550,000 IOPS Random Read (4KB, QD1) Up to 22,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD1) Up to 80,000 IOPS Operating Temperature 0°C to 70°C Reliability (MTBF) 1.5 Million Hours Endurance 1,200 TBW (Total Bytes Written) Get it at the link below: Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe SSD (MZ-V9P2T0B/AM): $369.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • Glad im on the right boat. Tidal has lots of issues in terms of app and music mix, its worst than spot but its honest. Spot algo is very tendentious and they pess less to artists, so im comfortable with the tidal errors, for now.
