I haven't seen this discussed anywhere, After logging in to the windows embedded site i stumbled across the updated Standard 8 CTP. Good to know this hasn't been axed in the recent edition cut.

In short the toolkit lets you create a customized distribution of windows 8 with just the components you need for virtual machines or devices.

Windows Embedded is not part of the retail edition of Windows. This is no different than previous versions.

It's a replacement for the existing Embedded Windows 7 - it's in use today in everything from POS terminals to ATMs to other hyper-specialized/niche uses (such as hotel whiteboards and kiosk usage) along with VMs and thin clients. It's not something the average user (or even the average system builder) will get hold of via a retailer or reseller.
