5-month-old given formula made with alcohol; mother arrested

A 5-month-old Stockton girl was hospitalized after her family said they accidentally used a water bottle filled with alcohol to make baby formula.

The girl's 26-year-old mother, Lesha Hill, was arrested Saturday on child abuse charges, authorities said. Hill's mother, Tressie Piggee, said she didn't think her daughter should face charges "because it was an accident."

The family took the girl to a hospital after the incident, and medical staff called police before transporting her to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

"A 5-month-old baby ingesting any amount of alcohol ? that's definitely a serious situation which has to be dealt with immediately," Officer Joe Silva of the Stockton Police Department told Fox40 in Sacramento.

Piggee said her granddaughter was continuing to recover.

"We feel bad for the baby because she's up there suffering right now because of our mistakes," she said.

Hill is due in court Tuesday.

Negligence is not accidental. Any dumb ass can smell alcohol. Why was there a 'water bottle' filled with alcohol near the baby's bottle? The only liquor that would be clear would be either Vodka or Moonshine, otherwise in addition to smelling the alcohol any one with half a brain would have noticed the color also... also as I recall when my daughter was on the bottle, I used the sink to fill the bottle with water, I would not have used anything else just lying around, unless they used the nursery water, and even then it comes in a gallon jug, not a water bottle.

If it is accidental it will be aired in court and taken into consideration but I can see it from the child protection agencys viewpoint too as they will be considering if this is just the top of an iceberg in regard to care of this child. The minimum sentence in this case I think would be contiual visits by the CPA to ensure the childs safety in this home atmosphere.

Although a terrible and very serious thing to happen, I can certainly sympathise with parents being in a rush; I do agree with jnelsoninjax however, it must have been some form of moonshine or home brew, as there is no way you'd mistake a regular grog bottle for water, and you shouldn't just be using bottled water you found just anywhere. That said though, I do challenge the fact that not all grog is particularly strong to smell; I've had many vodkas that only smell upon close inspection, and even then its more a sensation than a scent, and given the right variables (late at night, during a party that may have disturbed the baby, etc) it could potentially make it easy to mistake. I'm not saying they're excused for what they did, but I can certainly believe the scenario exists for it to be a genuine accident, and they shouldn't be treated like the worst parents in the world or even talked about as such without further detail. Just IMO anyway.

Lesha Hill - no pics of PIGGIE tho

Here is the way I think it went down... Lesha's baby daddy dropped by on a booty call, now baby daddy is a straight up playa - gotz mad skillz. So when he wants to throw down, they cants be interrupted for 3-4 hours FO SHO - So you gots to do summin wit dat little cash cow so its not interruptin his straight up sick skillz on a honey.

At least thats how I think it will play out on Judge Judy....

Say WHAT?? I can think of several others just off the top of my head, and I'm sure there are plenty more: tequila, gin, rum, various types of schnapps. Not defending this idiot woman at all, but seriously, you don't know WTF you are talking about with regards to liquor.

Yep, this in addition to what I already stated above. Some high quality vodka has almost no smell at all.

That may be true but I have a feeling that she wasn't a drinker of high end vodka.
