Twelve under-the-hood improvements in Opera 12, and 11.65

By Huib Kleinhout(huibk). Thursday, June 14, 2012 8:05:38 AM

Opera 12 has been released today! With Opera's new theming support it's easier than ever to dress Opera the way you like. But behind Opera's visual changes there are numerous of technical enhancements in Opera 12. Here are 12 of our favorite under-the-hood improvements in this release.

Faster startup with many tabs

Previously it could take a while to start Opera if you had many tabs open. In Opera 12 tabs are loaded smarter; fewer at the time with those that are visible or recently accessed loading first. Opera now always starts up equally fast no matter how many tabs you have open.

Out-of-Process Plug-ins

Plug-ins are notorious for causing stability issues. In fact almost one third of all crashes in Opera are caused by plug-ins. In Opera 12 plug-ins are isolated in a separate process, when they crash all you need to do is reload the page.

Experimental Hardware Acceleration and WebGL

Opera 12 contains experimental support for full hardware acceleration and WebGL. While the stability and performance depends on the OS, drivers and graphics card, it is already available for testing. Enabling opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableWebGL allows you to test WebGL content and enabling opera:config#UserPrefs|EnableHardwareAcceleration makes not only the web page but the whole user interface being render via the graphics card. By accessing opera:gpu you can check the current status of Hardware Acceleration and WebGL. Using opera:config#UserPrefs|Preferredrenderer you can switch between OpenGL (0) and DirectX (1).

opera:cpu

Is something slowing down Opera or your computer? You can now easily check with opera:cpu.

Improved loading performance

In Opera 12 the loading of pages has been optimized to ensure that resources like scripts, style sheets and images are loaded more efficiently. The result: Faster loading of pages!

Improved performance on secure connections

When loading a secure page (https) the browser goes through a complex process to establish a secure connection. This exact steps in this process vary from web server to web server, depending on the certificates, version and implementation of TLS they support. For Opera 12 we've analyzed and optimized many of the different steps in this process. Overall many secure pages are now loading faster than before!

RTL

In each release Opera learns a new language. New in Opera 12 is the capability to support Right-To-Left languages which makes it possible to support Arabic, Persian, Hebrew and Urdu. With Kazakh in addition, Opera is now translated into 55 languages.

Improved HTML5 support

HTML5 is the heart and soul of the web. Opera 12 adds support for drag and drop, camera access (getUserMedia), css animations and more.

Improved extensions support

The windows/tabs extensions api has been revamped to include support for access to tab stacks. Check out dev.opera for more upcoming extension features.

64 bit Windows and Mac

Opera 12 is now available in 64 bit for all platforms. Note that because 64 bit applications use more memory than their 32 bit equivalent, the default version of Opera for Windows will continue to be 32 bit.

Do Not Track

Opera 12 enhances your privacy by supporting the "Do Not Track" feature. You can enabled it in Opera's Preferences dialog (Preferences > Advanced > Security > Ask websites not to track me).

Improved address field suggestions

Based on feedback from you we've implemented numerous of tweaks to the address field making the suggested results cleaner, more accurate and more relevant.

Try out Opera 12 and stay tuned for new Opera Next builds!

Update: Mac App Store edition

Opera 12 was released earlier today through all our distribution channels but one. We now also announce the released of Opera 11.65, a security and stability update for the version of Opera that is distributed exclusively through the Mac App Store (MAS).

As of June 1st, it has been a requirement for all applications in the MAS to be using Mac OS? sandboxing security technology. Although Opera itself has completed all the work needed and is running fine in a sandboxed environment, we have chosen to delay the MAS release of Opera 12 with sandboxing enabled. To ensure that our users get the best experience, we need third party plug-ins such as Flash Player from Adobe and Java from Apple/Oracle working in a sandboxed environment. These key third-parties still need more time to update their products.

Opera 12 for Mac without sandboxing is available from http://www.opera.com/browser/ today, and Opera 11.65 will be made available in the Mac App Store shortly.

The Opera Unite personal web server feature has been discontinued with Opera 12, so I'm sticking with Opera 11.62

until I have completed transferring my website and other web content, to an actual physical web server in my office.

I am already using the physical web server for hosting screengrabs to post on forums like this ... but some of my

website content is still hosted on my PC with Opera Unite, so I won't be upgrading Opera until it's transferred.

Chromium has been available as 64 for a long time.

chromium doesn't auto update and lacks things chrome has such as the pdf viewer.

Not everyone here is stuck using Windows.

Well yeah, chrome, chromium, firefox, and opera have been available as 64 bit on linux for some time, I was talking about windows.

Aww, already removing Unite? But wasnt unite supposed to "change and reinvent the web"? haha sad.

Extensions taking over... You got to adapt the market.

They finally caught up to other browsers, nice. I hope the 6... release candidates got it stable enough!

That's nothing. I think 10.50 or earlier had like 8 or 9. It have been pretty stable since alpha. Like almost any Opera release.

But those with Windows 8 watch out. There is something in the Repease Preview that makes browsers (and especially Opera 12) to freeze your computer. More info here:

https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1081347-annoying-freezing-issue/

I'm using it now. I started using it a few days ago at work and it just blew me away, so now I am using it at home. The killer features for me is custom buttons and to start a private tab at any time. Beats the heck out of having to start a private session.

It's working fine on Win8 here. no freezes or lockups, and stable. had some issues with the last version where it would crash once or twice a day, might be related to a plugin or the amount of tabs I use it's a bug that shows up every few versions. no issues on 12 yet.

going to see how HWA works out.

    • Hey Google, these are the Gemini features I want in 2026 by Aditya Tiwari Google Gemini has been around for over three years. The AI chatbot started its journey back in 2023 (as Bard) when ChatGPT was already a talk of the town. However, it quickly attracted criticism after misrepresenting facts about the James Webb Space Telescope. The search giant spent a year fine-tuning Bard before rebranding the chatbot and its underlying generative AI model to Gemini, drawing inspiration from NASA's first human spaceflight program. Note that Bard was initially powered by LaMDA and PaLM 2; Google has since added several new features and integrations to Gemini. That said, there is scope for improvement and a gap for new features. I have been using Gemini for a while now and have realized that the chatbot lacks several features, making it harder for me to research across topics. These are mostly function-over-form updates that can improve the overall experience. Delete individual messages from a conversation Image via DepositPhotos.com One good thing about Gemini is that it can maintain context throughout the conversation. But things might get chaotic when you want to ask a related question, but don't want it to be part of your conversation in the long run. You can't ask that related question in a fresh chat because Gemini will lose the active conversation context of what you're trying to research. If Google allowed you to delete individual question/answer pairs, you could simply ask about a sub-topic and remove it from the conversation to create a smooth flow of important stuff. Offline mode Image via DepositPhotos.com A big pain of using Gemini daily is that everything loads from the cloud. It takes time for your chats to appear, and you can't view your conversation history while offline. To get a better idea, you can open the Gemini app and see how it looks without an internet connection. While Gemini models run in the cloud, it wouldn't hurt if Google could store chats (at least the text part) on the device so we can refer to them when offline. Google can also offer a lightweight version of its AI model to help with basic drafting, summarization, and other tasks. It has the Gemini Nano model, which can perform on-device processing on Google Pixel, Samsung, and some other Android brands, but it's a system feature and not related to the cloud-based Gemini app. Make temporary chats permanent I can't thank Google enough for taking the time and effort to add incognito mode or temporary chat mode to the Gemini app. It lets you have conversations without worrying that the topics will end up in your chat history or used for model training (at least on paper). Google claims that it doesn't use your temporary chats to "personalize your Gemini experience or train Google’s AI models." However, the data is stored "up to 72 hours to respond to you and to process any feedback you choose to provide." That said, I often start researching something in a temporary chat, only to realize the chatbot's answer is good enough to refer to later. Sadly, Gemini doesn't have an option to make such temporary chats permanent. In other words, I won't be able to follow up on it if I close the temporary chat. I'm left with alternatives like copying the answers into notes or another app. My digital life will get a lot better if Gemini gets a button to make temporary chats permanent. Collapse answers for a cleaner view You're heavily invested in your research game and suddenly feel the need to go up in the chat to recall something. This is when the conversation thread starts to feel like an overwhelming, unending wall of questions and answers. What if Google added a way to collapse Q&A pairs in the Gemini chat thread? It would look quite clean and easy to navigate. You'll quickly get an overview of everything you have discussed with the chatbot. Add buttons to jump between messages Suggested mockup of the feature. This reminds me of a small but useful Gemini feature that Google could add to its chatbot: the ability to hop between prompts in a conversation. Just add simple up- and down-arrow buttons, similar to YouTube Shorts, so people can quickly scroll through the messages. A table of contents or Chat Overview It's hard to get a bird's-eye view of everything you have discussed with the chatbot during a lengthy conversation. This is where a table of contents, or Chat Overview, displayed at the top of the screen, possibly in a drop-down button, might come in handy. You'll be able to get an overview of the chat and jump between messages, serving as an alternative to the up/down arrow buttons. Temporary mode for Gemini Live Image: Google You can use Gemini Live to have real-time conversations with the chatbot, which feels like you're talking to someone in the same room. However, a downside is that Gemini Live doesn't work in Temporary Chat mode, so all your conversations end up in the chat history. Google should consider expanding the temporary chat mode to include Gemini Live. Default to a specific chat One thing that feels somewhat annoying to me is that Gemini always opens in a new chat, whether on web or mobile. Sometimes, you want to return to your last chat. Google can take cues from web browsers, which let you choose whether you want to go to a new tab or a specific web page(s). Gemini can also have options to default to a specific chat when reopened. That said, generative AI chatbots have endless possibilities given the vagueness of their work. You can mold them the way you want by attaching different connectors, adding custom instructions, and including source files. It remains to be seen what Google has in store for future updates and whether anything from this wishlist gets the green light. The search giant released a stream of new Gemini updates in recent months, including Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini Omni Spark, adding that it now has 13 products with more than a billion users each. What do you want to see in the Gemini app? Tell us in the comments.
