I don't know what the problem is but over the past 18 months or so I haven't been bothered with games. E3 comes around and I am really excited for games that are coming and when they eventually come out I rent them and end up returning them the same day the disc arrives in the post.

I'm not sure whether its the quality of games that has declined as of late, or whether I'm just burned out on certain types or settings of games, maybe I'm just growing out of playing games which is sad as I've seen it happen to a number of friends and thought that it would never happen to me.

I got really excited about the Vita, had it for 2 months then got bored and sold it.

Is it just me or does anyone else have the same problem?

I want to like games but they never hold my interest for more than 5-10 minutes.

I always get excited about games, just like before, but I end up getting and playing them for about 30 minutes before I get bored and forget about it. This has been going on for several years now, and it's really annoying because I do like games.

However, on the good side of things, I have a renewed interest in World of Warcraft of all games. I've been playing it a lot lately, which I haven't since the old days. Surprising, even to myself, because I rarely do enjoy MMO games on my own, but now I can play it fine just on my own.

I am in a similar situation. I have all these games to play but never get round to playing them.
I think it might be the fact most games nowadays are not exactly exciting or do anything different. Most are just action shooters or an FPS. I find myself re-playing older games that i haven't played in a while. Also like to go on gog.com and get some classics.

I still get the odd few games that i will stick at and get sucked in to, like, Assassin's Creed (cannot stress how much i love this series). Mass Effect, Skyrim, Yakuza, Final Fantasy, Batman, Borderlands.

It depends on the game.

I got Skyrim a few months ago and am still playing it today. There's so much to do, and it feels like a living, breathing world.

I also got Prototype 2 a couple of days after it launched, and I've not really made any progress with it. I played it for the first day, then went back to Skyrim. In comparison, Prototype 2 just feels like mindless fun (much the same as Just Cause 2, which I also got recently and it has suffered in the same way as Prototype).

I've taken a break from the FPS genre for a while now, and I do find myself with an itchy trigger finger, so I may jump back to the singleplayer of Battlefield 3 sometime soon. But all FPS games seem to suffer from the same problem - they could all be one-and-the-same game. Point A to Point B, shoot anything that moves.

EDIT: Assassin's Creed is a great series in my opinion, but once I get done with the storyline there is very little that makes me continue to run over rooftops, I just put it down and move on to a different game.

Sadly, I'm the same at the moment :(

I keep telling myself it's just a phase I'm going through, but it's just getting worse really. I think my internet addiction has taken over my gaming addiction, plus my sleeping pattern is all over the place, so I feel pretty drained, so don't have the motivation to put in the effort.

This seriously needs to be addressed, before it's too late. I shall go forth and game immediately.

*starts planning how to get another screen closer to desktop*

If you get bored of Skyrim within 5-10 minutes, then gaming isn't for you my friend.

I've noticed many gamers try to over-optimise their game play like rush leveling etc. That kind of thing will ruin any game. Play it naturally and don't over do it. Let it immerse you. Especially with beautiful worlds like Skyrim. I'm still playing it after two months.

I can't wait for the Dawnguard DLC ;)

Skyrim was good but even Dawnguard doesn't interest me in the slightest even though I really enjoyed Skyrim.

Thank God you posted this, because I was starting to think I was the only one. I use to spend entire weekends and many hours during the week playing games, but now I can't be bothered. I just don't care anymore. Actually, it's so bad that my GF won't let me buy any more because I just waste money. I read somewhere the average gamer is 35 or so. I'm not even 30 and I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep if gaming stopped.

I think lots has to do with these types of games:
  • me too's
  • Graphics rock, heart and soul of the game bombs
  • Game is good, but takes too long to get into it to enjoy it fully (think FF XIII for example. It's an extreme example, but the actual game starts after 13 hours lol)

Same. I don’t get excitement as a feeling like I did before when playing new video games I anticipated. :(

My theory about it is because I became more and more of a tech guy, thus a little bit dissociated from my emotions. It’s safe to say we’re all like this on Neowin, unfortunately.

you're probably growing up, i don't get excited about them any more either.

they are just things i do to pass the time when i'm not cooking, cleaning, washing up, working, driving, sleeping or out

it happens to us all :)

Agreed. I love technology and I'm addicted to the web. It's constantly evolving. Games, however, have been more or less the same machine with a new coat of paint.

I think age has been the winning factor in killing my passion for a lot of things, I used to be excited for everything computer related, even a flash player update would be like "Wooo"

Now I couldn't care less about new windows being released, new games coming out, new hardware... I find myself becoming the boring adult I used to laugh at when I was younger and find myself just wanting "Something that works"

I used to run the cutting edge everything with all its faults and bugs and love spending hours finding workarounds to problems, now I cba !

I think this is the common factor. For instance, I used to love playing the original Counter-Strike but now I'm barely interested in the new one that's due out (though I'll probably grab it anyway as it's going to be cheap). I can go a week without playing games and not even notice. Still, when I find the right game I still find myself getting sucked in. I put over 85hrs into Skyrim, 80hrs into Diablo III, over 120hrs into Civilization V and about 100hrs into Borderlands, and I got really into The Witcher 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The problem is that I just don't get as much excitement from the average games that I used to - I'm much more interested in games that involve strategy and thinking, rather than the twitch shooters that used to be my mainstay.

The only positive thing is that I still find myself getting excited about some games. For instance, Far Cry 3 and Borderlands 2 both look great and WatchDogs has the potential to be epic.
