My first ever smartphone after years of avoiding them has been the T-mobile Comet. I like the size and shape of the phone so that is what drew me to it besides Android.

The problem over time has been Android but could also be the internals of the phone. This comes with android 2.2 Froyo and it is slow as heck and and does not work like I want.

Is it possible to upgrade to 2.3.xx at least? Is 2.3 faster and better?

I am saving up to get a new phone by years end with the 4.1 Jelly bean which looks great.
