Anyone seen a Malware infection on Win 8 RP yet?

Actually, what gets people are those free download sites. You know, like downloading a texture pack for Minecraft or something. There are 4 "Download Now" buttons on a page where you need to download the texture pack. My friend accidentally clicked one and my ESET Nod32 install came up with a warning.

Why the hell do people use those file sites?

I actually had something similar happen to me. The site I was on provides a executable browser I guess so you can see the files that people uploaded. Or something like YouSendIt's exe file. I was downloading a mod for Minecraft and on the right side was a Download now link. No other text around it except on the far left side describing their exe file. I clicked that Download now link and it started downloading that exe file. I canceled it out and later noticed right above that same download now link, was a string saying "Your download will be ready in 15 seconds".

Once the download was ready, I just had a very basic text link (not a button like the Download Now link), that said Click here to download.

Those sites should be removed.

If they do it will be from the Desktop side, not Metro. Speaking of, anyone stumble across a way to disable the Desktop portion to non-admins?

A better example of where the **** do they get it at is "Mywebsearch" I swear to god (not joking) 99.999999999% of all of my 1,700+ customers have had this installed. yet I have NEVER been prompted to install it in my life.

I've tried real hard to get MyWebSearch in a VM using XP & IE6. Just couldn't find it. No idea what kind of obscure websites people visit to get this crap.

as for the people saying that it won't make your average village idiot any safer on his/her PC, I'd say it will, since it comes pre-installed with MSE (and your average village idiot doesn't normally install security software)

Although on machines with secure boot enabled Windows 8 may be a bit more virus hardened, for the majority of computers already on the market it won't be any better than Windows 7. There's no substitute for a savvy user.

yeah, I hate them -.= but IME, those download now buttons are normally ads...whoever's running the ad server should take better care of it

My web search used to come pre-installed on all Dell computers. I'm not sure what it has evolved in to at this point

I'm working on a machine right now that still has the Best Buy demo software installed on it from 5 years ago. So this means that is how it left the store.

People aren't stupid they just don't know any better, and don't take the time to learn. They didn't have time for Dungeons and Dragons either, more like basketball and cheerleading squad.

The majority of infections I see are on computers that are running current antivirus software of all kinds. So as Dr. House says, "everybody lies". What were you doing when you noticed something weird happening? "nothing, nothing at all." Basically they were holding the front door open while the virus made itself at home.

At least the 85 yr old mans computer I fixed yesterday admitted he was surfing porn. Nice to know he's still normal after all these years.

I believe it's included with crap like incredimail, which is a sin to run in itself. .

It's practically impossible for an AV to stop a trojan, especially if it's one that's adaptive and will change frequently or even every download.

So much freeware also comes bundled with crapware these days you have to be really on your guard. Thankfully they don't usually make it all that hard to uninstall
