Well let's see.

Option one: prime-time cable television has discovered a genuine mind reader, someone who will basically change every rule in the book of what's humanly possible, and likely be catapulted to the highest of highs!

Option two: the show is fake and staged.

Option one seems to be the right one! :p Because he really is a Mind Reader by profession.

I'm more perplexed by what the hell Sharon Osborne did to her face.

There’s one of the greatest magicians here in Quebec, he’s called Luc Langevin and he does tricks of these kinds. Nothing is staged, there’s something else behind the trick and I haven’t found what it is.

If he's a mind-reader, why does he ask the judges to draw or write? He should be able to read their minds. :)

Because they could lie about what they were thinking about.

Slight of hand and misdirection. Notice that he took the folded note from Sharon, then began distracting people by asking to hold her hand and all that. He must have switched the folded note for another and sneaked a peek at what she wrote.

You have to question every part of the trick. A lot of things that you think are just showmanship are actually part of the trick.

In the first trick, why the half dollars? Because they leave a small gap at the bottom of the tape to see through. So he's able to peek at the drawings before they're held above his head.

The second trick is a little more complex. First of all, she hands the piece of paper to him, when he asks the other judges if they can see through it. My guess, he does a swap and gives her back a different folded up paper. Through a little deception, he's able to read the name on the paper without anybody noticing. Then he's able to swap the fake paper with the real one when he asks to hold her hand.

Derren brown did a show here in the UK explaining how he "reads minds" its all to do with influencing people without them knowing. People think they are been totally random but its actually something he placed around the stage/set/whatever in advance.

It's nothing new. Derren Brown does stuff like this all the time.

You can learn a little more about cold reading in an interview with Richard Dawkins.

Can anyone remember a trick that did actually get used in bars etc to cheat them out of money / get free drinks

It was some clever maths trick that would say something like: Could you change this £20 while I pay for my drinks with this £20, but somewhere inbetween they would confuse the tiller and end up getting either £40 and free drinks or more money than they gave in the first place

Can't remember it properly but was a pretty clever trick that amazed me back in the day

It's a clever trick that I wish I knew.
