Microsoft Is In Serious Danger Of Flying Straight Into A Mountain With Wind

Recommended Posts

Alarm bells must be ringing in Microsoft's Redmond headquarters.

Microsoft is close to releasing Windows 8 and it's shaping up to be another "Vista." Only this time the repercussions could be much worse.

The critics who have been using Windows 8 are extremely negative on the new look and feel of the operating system:

  • At Slate, Farhad Manjoo writes, "In my time with Windows 8, I?ve felt almost totally at sea?confused, paralyzed, angry, and ultimately resigned to the pain of having to alter the way I do most of my work."

  • At Marketwatch, John Dvorak says, "Windows 8 looks to me to be an unmitigated disaster that could decidedly hurt the company and its future ... The real problem is that it is both unusable and annoying."

  • Our own analyst, and long time Microsoft observer Matt Rosoff said, "I still think it's needlessly confusing and hard to use ... I've spoken to other people who have been testing Windows 8 for months. A lot of them found it puzzling like I did, and it's getting worse, not better, with each beta update."

They made these claims when Vista was released, and when Windows7 was released, so far the "experts" have been 100% wrong, I don't trust any of them, hell they said the same thing about Windows XP!

I think more were positive with Windows 7 due to the needed change of the kernel. the Vista one was a whopper.

Vista was a failure in my opinion. Win7 was great. Win8 RP at least, is an eyesore in my opinion. But it works great.

even worked great under vmware.

I do seem to recall the 'doom and gloom' forecast for Windows 7 up until it was released and then all the doomsayers seemed to like it all of the sudden. Basically MS is the red headed step child, the whipping boy, everyone loves to hate them just like everyone loves to hate Wal-Mart at the same time they still buy the product and still shop at the stores...

well. as I always say, Change isn't always good change.

More like change - even when asked for - is always resisted.

Windows 8 is a decent operating system. In my opinion the default theme is better than Windows 7 and the start screen is an improvement over the start menu. WinRT apps are pretty terrible in a desktop environment but they are completely avoidable, much like gadgets were.

Will it be a success? Well, it's all relative but I don't think it will do worse any worse than Vista. While desktop users may moan about the changes they will actually appeal to tablet users, which will make up a larger part of the market. And as it offers better performance for gaming it will likely be the chosen platform for enthusiasts.

People don't like change. They'll moan about it for a while - just as they did with the ribbon for Office - but then they'll quickly get used to it. Either that or they'll wait to Windows 9, when Microsoft will likely have refined the experience further.

I loved Vista; It ran great on my Desktop I had back then.

I'm sticking with 7 because MS just messed with most of what I'm familiar with.

Why do you think I've been referencing *comfort* in all my responses to the anti-8 posts?

The Windows 7 UI is the tech equivalent of *comfort food* - or Bambi. You would think that is exactly what happened - that the Steves (Ballmer and Sinofsky) just blew Bambi away - with an L-frame .44 Magnum S&W - on BSkyB.

Its going to hurt Microsoft because a lot of enterprise companys will not upgrade to Windows 8 and will skip the OS. Knowing my job, i got a feeling everyone might re-train on how to use a computer then deal with 1000x calls a hour with everyone will be lost and confused trying to do stuff they already know how to do in win 7

lol these "experts" are probably the same noobs that still use the start button, even in win7

Evidently, my non-techie friends are more savvy than these so-called tech journalists. Because, they've been using Windows 8 for months without any of the confusion and pain of these people. I installed the CP on three computers back in February, mine, my fianc?e's and one a brand new rig I built for a friend. In June I installed the RP on another friend's laptop and had the others update to the RP also.

In the 6 months that Windows 8 has been installed on these non-tech people's computers, I've gotten one call. Yes, ONE. That was to find out how to bring up the Snap View.

I said all that to say this. How is it these people can use their computers just fine same as they were before, and these tech people can't? I do realize that most people use their computers for simpler things. But, one of my friend's is in Real Estate and has some productivity programs she uses on her computers. Not to mention, each of these people has remarked on how cool it looks and dig all the things you can do on the Start Screen.

It just baffles me, is all. Not saying they're not speaking the truth (for them). I'm just saying it's hard to grasp.

Edit: I forgot about my brother who is a game and app developer. He built himself a rig and put Windows 8 RP on it and he loves it. He's actively developing apps and games and it doesn't seem to hinder his productivity at all.

No one asked for this Metro touch crap.

You didn't? Then explain the rising sales of tablets - especially Android and iOS.

Explan the rising sales (in the past year) in the non-Windows space in general.

Explain the growing interest - on Neowin, no less - in Android ICS and Jellybean - which is, in fact, everything WinRT is. Android is cheered on - WinRT (not merely WindowsRT) is reviled - why?
