VALLEY VILLAGE, CA (KTLA) -- Two women were electrocuted Wednesday night when they tried to help the victim of a car crash in Valley Village.

The crash happened just before 8:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Magnolia Boulevard, near Laurel Canyon Boulevard.

A 2012 Chevy Traverse traveling westbound on Magnolia when the driver tried to make a right turn from the left turn lane and lost control, police said.

The vehicle ran off the roadway and collided with a fire hydrant and a light pole on the northwest corner of Ben Avenue and Magnolia.

Authorities said the light pole he hit was an old-fashioned concrete standard, and when it went down, it left behind electrical wires sticking out of the ground.

The live wires made contact with water gushing from the fire hydrant, and the growing pool of water became electrified.

One of the victims has been identified as 40-year-old Irma Zamora, from Burbank.

The other woman has not been identified, pending notification of her next of kin.

Eight citizens attempted to help the women, including the driver and a Los Angles police officer, authorities said.

Those people sustained injuries when they came in contact with the electrically charged water. They were all taken to local hospitals.

The power to the electrical lines was turned off by DWP workers, allowing firefighters to safely come in and shut off the hydrant.

Investigators said that excessive speed was likely a factor in the crash. It's not believed that alcohol was involved.
