Apple usually mentions when developers will get their hands on preview releases but not at today's event. The developer site has just gone down for maintenance, however, but briefly sported a graphic stating that it's available to developers now. The release notes have also been uploaded.

I'm also hoping it'll come back with a preview release of the new iTunes (version 11?)

So in a few hours I'm sure it'll be all over the internet.

Hopefully it leaks soon. I'm looking forward to trying out the new maps app.

Yes, I think the 3D mapping is absolutely amazing. Though I've shown it to a few people who just weren't impressed. Still a few issues to work out, particularly with points of interest, but a decent start.

In fact, the GM seed is now available from the developer site.

The thing I'm sure a lot of people will be disappointed about (myself included) would be a lack of directions for public transportation and walking. I don't think those features were included in any of the beta builds, so it's doubtful they would suddenly show up in the final. Not a huge huge deal, but it's still a downgrade from the Google maps app.

Hmm, well give me 30 minutes and I'll tell you.

Edit: Oh in fact, walking directions are in Beta 4 but very buggy. When I ask for directions to Portland Street or Portland Street, Manchester (about 10 minutes walk away) I'm given directions to a Portland Street 12 miles away.

Public transportion directions gives links to App Store apps, with no results available.

I believe that's correct, although the API has been expanded to allow 3rd party apps to fill in this gap [eventually].

Ooo, that's interesting. Maybe they will have it figured out after all. Thanks for the update on that. :)

Hmm...I'm wondering 2 things at the moment:

1) Previous iOS GMs were not UDID locked like the beta version. Does anyone know if that is true about iOS 6 GM?

2) Anyone know what the status is for Jailbreaking iOS 6 on my iPhone 4? I think I saw that at least my first batch iPhone 4 will always have a untethered-JB because of a hardware exploit that they can't ever patch. I've become dependent on a few JB apps now (BiteSMS being the biggest one).

Technically it wouldn't be the GM if it was UDID locked. It's the version that's going out through iTunes and OTA after all.

It's not. Although the build number may be the same, I think the timestamp and release channels determine whether the UDID is locked or not. I wouldn't chance it anyhow.

Haven't previous GM's been bit for bit the exact same file?

I'm not technically familiar with how exactly Apple does the "UDID" locking, but since Apple does handle the activation requests I presume that they can block activation requests from non-dev UDIDs and still have the exact same iOS software. Presumably.... Assumably... As in I'm probably wrong...

Haven't previous GM's been bit for bit the exact same file?

In most cases, yes. Some cases they have had to release a 2nd or even a 3rd GM before getting to RTM. But I still stand by my logic that they can have the exact same file bit-by-bit and still refuse to activate non-dev UDIDs. Activation is done through the Internets on Apple's server so it doesn't matter what the GM is because Apple servers have the final say on if the code can be activated to run on your device or not.

Still, previous GMs ran just fine on non-dev UDIDs. I'd like to see some conformation on this though before I offer up my devices as guinea pigs.

There's no iTunes 10.7 for anyone interested

Some are saying that the installer on the web site installs 10.7 even though it says it is still 10.6.x or w/e. I haven't tried it yet.

There actually haven't been any UDID locks in any of the iOS 6 betas strangely.

Oh, and I downloaded iTunes 10.7 (mac) btw. Filename is simply iTunes10.7.dmg and it installs... iTunes 10.7.

Really? Hmm... then why did I have my developer friend add my iPad to his UDID list :-P? And then there were all those sites popping up advertising to register you UDID for you for $15 or w/e. I guess all of that wasn't necessary?

Admitting, I never tried to install it on a device that did not have UDID registered as a developer device. But that is because all the information at the time said you had to have your device registered in order for Apple to activate.

Just loaded iOS 6 onto my new iPad and there's just nothing of interest there. Apple's new Maps app is a tremendous step backwards compared to Google Maps. There are no public transit directions available whatsoever in Amsterdam and for whatever reason Apple thought it was a good idea to give building blocks the same color as rural land. Turn-by-turn navigation is in English, which just sounds incredibly dumb when it involves Dutch street names. The only thing I like is the new Clock app (took them long enough to add), but STILL no Weather app present.

It just seems like Apple is sitting on its ass doing hardly anything of interest anymore.

The maps app is a step backwards, but Google Maps on iOS really wasn't that great either. Sadly the only real solution for good maps on iOS may be 3rd party.

iOS 6 just isn't as significant of an update as 4 (multitasking) and 5 (notifications) were. There are subtle refinements but no major new features that I'm terribly interested in.

Got it running on iPhone 4S. Safari feels a lot more snappier than before.. Siri, finally can find things in Canada. Good thing they removed the YouTube app, because the one from apple store is so much better! Apple maps is okay, I guess. Nothing really new.

agreed on all of the above except that the live traffic is for a lot fewer reports than was with google maps. hope that is improved with time.

    • Web search has been one of those crap ware that I try to get rid of asap. It's annoying and slow. It was a cheap way for Microsoft to drive traffic to Bing.
    • All I can say is that think the USB G8 is better in many ways, and costs the same or slightly less. I wouldn't part with mine. It's even a big improvement over the G6 USB. (You can also use studio phones (up to 600 OHMs I think) with the G8, but I have to say that even relatively cheap 30-50 OHM phones sound absolutely great--far better than through most internal motherboard sound!) Considering the difference in these products I am surprised that Creative is still making the PCIe internal card versions. https://www.headphoneer.com/cr...ve-sound-blaster-g8-review/
    • I missed this when you first posted it, but those are awesome icons! I would normally prefer things to be uniform, but each of those icons seems to fit perfectly for the game! If I may ask though, what was your thought process on which icons are circular - MK makes sense - and which ones should be rectangular or square?
    • What I like about Paint is using it almost exclusively for cropping and resizing images I get elsewhere--it's quick, easy and cheap... I keep it glued to my taskbar, in fact. Also, the clipping tool comes in handy, as well (hit print scrn on the keyboard and it activates immediately.)
    • I still remember it fondly today. It was so cool to work in 64-color Half Bright mode and 4.096-color HAM mode (interlaced) when x86 was still in 4-color CGA or 16-color EGA low res. C= never realized what it had until it was far too late--the failure of C= was the failure of its top management. The C= Amiga was 20 years ahead of its time, I always thought. It didn't hurt that in only 512k of chip memory, the Amiga could preemptively multitask when Apple was still doing gray scale graphics on tiny screens and along with everyone else was doing cooperative multitasking (running more than one app at a time in resident memory, but you could only run one of them at a time--had to manually switch between them.) I had a ball with AREXX scripting running between programs that had AREXX ports so that when you sent other applications data and instructions, those running applications could process the same in real time to output! Memories...
