Is it possible to bring Windows XP x64 up to date?

Just use Windows 7. There's no need for XP anymore unless your system is ancient.

which you would realize the system in question sorta is if you would read through the thread

From reading this thread it sounds like the system in question can run Windows 7 just fine.

that's why i said, "sorta old". the only driver he has left to get working is the display driver from the looks of it

Yea, I think after all this time now of putting into the Win7 driver issue and not finding anything to work, am just going to install XP and enable PAE. Too frustrating, plus it's slow on Win7.

PAE only interferes with poorly written graphics drivers, it's a common myth that it causes system instability (Every server with > 3.5GB RAM in the 90s and 00s used PAE without any hicups)

I'm pretty sure a Microsoft employee said that PAE for x86 was bad if you use consumer drivers as they don't really get adapted for PAE. This is why you mentioned server as it's more of a server feature with proper drivers that fully support it.

Are they using anything that requires Windows? In this case it might be easier to go the Ubuntu route, especially since PAE is not a very good solution (I believe you need specially written software to take advantage of it).

how much ram is on the system what CPU is it cause windows 7 should run just fine .

Well, it's slow on this old athlon 3000+. Also, 8gigs ddr2. Installing XP now, will enable PAE on it after.

then ther somthiong wrong because i had windows 7 on much older system then that far older and it ran butter smooth and No dont use PAE it can harm the system and hurt it more then it helps XP is a bad ide and PAE no way

Let me know how it goes. I'll be really surprised if you can get everything to work properly with PAE enabled. Very surprised.

(Also, is there a reason why you really need 8GB of RAM on such an old machine? Specific software? My main computer that I'm using for pretty much everything including gaming, Java development and VM's runs Windows 7 x64 with 4GB of RAM and it's perfectly fine?)

I upgraded the ram in this system to 8gigs. XP x86 will not utilize all the ram and their kid is studying graphics/media stuff that I don't understand. So will need full utilization of the 8gigs DDR2.

If the rest of the hardware isn't that great, then 8GB of RAM won't really make a difference. Win7 should run just fine on anything with that much RAM. We've got some Core2Duo machines that had XP on them and upgrade to Win7 they run much better. I don't see the slowdowns over time that I did with XP.

Note: Windows XP 64bit shipped with SP1 built in, so SP2 is the same as SP3 for Xp code wise.

Yes.

Windows XP x86 is Windows NT 5.1, which has three service packs.

Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x64 is Windows NT 5.2, which has only two service packs.

So if you're running XP x64 SP2, you're already up to date, it's got everything XP x86 SP3 has.

Ok. I understand what everyone is saying. Anyways, to the meat of this: WinXP SP3 installed. PAE enabled and zero issues. So far. I will keep it doggin for a few more days before I give this system to them and see what happens. But so far, so good. *knock on wood*

if you are giving the system to someone then you dont want to enable PAE or anything liek that take some ram out then give to them or install windows 7 again on it cause i hardly believe ya when ya said it ran slow because i have windows 7 running on a AMd Athlon XP 1.6ghz chip with 1.5gb of ram and cheap PCI card to do Aero and thre sucker runs like a dream

Don't care what you believe. Thanx for everyone's help.

Then don't ask for help. They were offering their opinion based on the fact that you're not the one that's going to be living with this machine around the clock.

Everyone has already told you that Service Pack 2 for the 64-bit XP is the same as SP3 for the x86 version which is true.

The information was there, but for some reason you're choosing the hard route, and then being rude to someone who is pointing something that is actually true.

Being rude? He was being rude first by calling me a liar. So f*ck him. I understand what they were saying. He didn't have to go out his way to call me a liar.

You should calm yourself because he is only stating facts. My older system, once again in my signature, ran Win7 just fine with a really old mobile processor, I even played games in Win 7, mostly falcom ones and even some PS2 ported to PC ones (onimusha 3).

If you feel the system slow then you have a problem in that specific hardware, seeing that only the graphics card gave you problem and you felt the system slow, there IS something weird going on your system, because even with no graphics acceleration it runs quite fast.

BE POLITE.

So, it's ok for him to tell me I'm lieing? That's being polite? Don't think so. Someone gets rude to me, expect to get the same in return.

They said they hardly believe the system runs slow. With the specs it shouldn't.

You're ignoring practically all help offered, and violating Wheaton's Law.

Seriously drop the caffeine intake, get some sleep and think about it rationally.

Fine. I'm a Dick. No argument there. I'll pull out 4gigs ram and reinstall WinXP. I am not willing to put Win7 back on it, because I cannot find the one driver and will not install any driver in compatibility mode. Plus it was a bit slow. Y'all can believe me on that or no. Maybe a bad generic driver added by Windows. I don't know.

Well why not give specifics about the driver, what version and such. I might be able to find something that can help.

There are people willing to help, and there are always going to be people that challenge information presented if it's not seeming to make sense. :)

That how debate and discussion goes. If we all agreed about everything, nothing would ever get done. :p

    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 changelog: Added 'Reset to recommended' button for the Options. General fixes and improvements. WACUP 1.99.51.24568 Preview changelog: Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when doing some of the drag + drop actions within the media library window Fixed a loading crash seen related to a problem with some of the artwork cache image files being restored which should now be better handled allowing for the bad image to be removed without it failing Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when the internal metadata cache clearing is triggered which could block the main ui thread for too long with this now being moved to a background thread Fixed some performance issues with some of the methods related to determining artwork support which mainly affected the local library import / refresh (this is still slower for some compared to other players because there's more data & artwork aspects being checked for which means doing more processing on a single file despite the best of attempts to reduce duplicate / heavy processing where possible) Fixed a crash with the JTFE based missing files hotkey which no one seems to have used for an age for this to appear (maybe it's time to seriously consider stripping out features that aren't being used) Fixed how some of the file types which use extra information to reference their sub-songs is handled which was preventing some from being correctly resolved back to their base file (noticed fixing above) Fixed an issue with the handling of files with underscores in their filepath which wasn't being correctly handled causing some of the filename to be lost when shown as the title if title reading is delayed Fixed a few things that might be behind NotSoDirect not being stable for some setups though am still not certain that the changes done for this are going to fully resolve the problem from the crash reports Fixed the OS toast handling when there's no prior shortcut in the OS start menu to now create the shortcut (needed to allow the yes/no buttons for the new build / post-release toast) to be done as a hidden one so it's less likely to cause annoyance for those not wanting to see it whilst still allowing this less than ideal OS api implementation requirement to be met to avoid toasts without the needed buttons Fixed a regression when moving from taglib1 to taglib2 which broke some of the handling in place to allow for external programs to still access files when wacup has a held open cached instance of the file Everything else Updated cppwinrt (gen_win10shell.dll) to 3.0.260520.1 (26 May 2026) Updated libcurl (libcurl.dll) to 8.2.1 (24 Jun 2026) Updated Monkey's Audio (in_ape.dll) to 13.15 (28 Jun 2026) Updated mpg123 (mpg123.dll) to 1.33.6 (6 Jun 2026) Updated OpenSSL (libcurl.dll) to 3.5.7 (9 Jun 2026) Updated pugixml to 1.16 (16 Jun 2026) Updated taglib (tag2.dll) to 2.3.0 (11 May 2026) Updated vgmstream (in_vgmstream.dll) to the latest Git commit from 28 Jun 2026 Download: WACUP 64-bit | 9.6 MB (Freeware) Download: WACUP 32-bit View: WACUP Website | Screenshots Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
