In fairness, you didn't provide too much information in your original post. If you have tried using Google, where did you encounter a problem?

Everyone on this site seems to be so up their own arse. I don't see the point replying with a negative comment when it would take the same length of time to post a positive one. Without people posting the community and effectively Neowin would be dead.

To the OP, take a look at DES encryption: http://www.mkyong.co...d-des-tutorial/.

Also, take a look at : http://www.java2s.co...ecurity/DES.htm

Based upon...

I have seen a number of your comments on this board and you come across as a complete 133test tosser. Every one of your posts I have seen seem to be negative, de-constructive and completely unhelpful. Why? Why do you use this board? Neowin markets itself as a friendly community. Not everyone is at the same level, some people are still learning and you should feel privileged that they are turning to Neowin for help rather than stack overflow and the likes (i also find it hilarious someone posted links to another site telling them to ask there). Inst that the bloody point?!

I've only just become a moderator so I'm not going to do anything, but if you have a problem with a user you should do it with a PM, not go off-topic in a thread. (Y)

I don't want to be part of this 'community'. Just delete my account thanks.

ok here is some more information maybe you can help me ... I have now encrypted the messaged yay.... BUT i want to use a key i have chosen rather then the keygenerator ... i am having some issues with this though can anyone please show me a way to encrypt using my own desired key as I wish to decrypt and my program requires the old corn chicken and fox so encryptions have to be correct and the same

I agree with him however, A simple search for "JAVA AES128 Encryption" on google yields countless working results on how to encrypt strings. Also as mentioned, stackoverflow is a great asset, as is providing more information on what you're trying to accomplish. "HLP MEEZ!" usually does not yield useful answers from the community.

Here's a freebee. Why not tell us if you're just trying to encrypt, such as store in a database, or if you want to encrypt to transmit. One could use AES128, the other would use SSL. Nobody can tell you how to encrypt your strings if you don't tell us the context and how you're using encryption.

Here's your freebee, that took me 2 seconds on google.:

http://www.javamex.c...symmetric.shtml

In case you're wondering how I found this so quickly,

  1. Open google. Type in "JAVA AES128 example"
  2. Click the VERY first result http://stackoverflow...ication-in-java
  3. Click the 2nd answer:http://www.javamex.c...symmetric.shtml

i will look at your links thanks for the help ... I am making a 2 way chat client (p2p) and i am encrypting the messages ... but before the chat can be secure I have to get an encryption code to both parties ....

so what i need to do is take and encryption key and encrypt it with a different key ... then send it to person B person B then encrypts the encrypted key with there encryption key... they then send it back ... person A (me) then removes the original encryption placed upon it leaving only person Bs encryption on the key.... person A is then meant to send it back to B so they can remove their encryption to see the shared encryption key so they can talk securely... :)

Why do you want to encrpyt the actual message? if you use SSL in your p2p app, then the entire communication is encrpyted, and nobody would be able to read the message. This saves you having to:

1.) Share encryption keys

2.) add code/time/complexity to en/decrypt messages each time they get sent.

Why re-invent security when you can easily use an SSL connection between your clients/apps to secure the ENTIRE connection. I asked this same question on stack overflow the other day, as I was thinking of using AES128 to encrypt user names being sent over http. I was later convinced by users to just go with an SSL connection for the entire session.

SSL isnt as golden as most people think.... if it can be "secured" one end and read the other without any kind of key or both users having an input then I dont trust it there is obviously a way for it to be read sooo its not the level of security i want

Uh... perhaps you should look up how SSL works. SSL uses keys, a private and public key.

http://security.stac...w-does-ssl-work

http://www.inet2000..../encryption.htm

unless you have a self signed cert in play, or someone uses a MITM attack to inject they're own known cert into your session, it's pretty damn secure...if it wasn't I don't think the worlds banks and other organizations would be using it. With a 128bit key, there are over 339,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible key combinations, and would take someone longer than the age of the universe to crack.

Something tells me you should probably learn a little more before messing with this stuff, so that you better understand the technologies you're working with. No offense.

    • Microsoft AI boss no longer believes that AI will replace human workers by David Uzondu Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, recently took back his statements concerning white-collar jobs that he gave to the Financial Times in an interview made back in February, where he claimed that AI would replace office workers within 12 to 18 months. On Monday's episode of The Verge's Decoder, Suleyman recast the technology as more like a helpmate than a tool designed to take over your job. He explained that smaller office duties will "increasingly become digitized, automated" as people generate more digital materials. During the discussion, Suleyman emphasized a "very important distinction" between "tasks" and "jobs" to clarify his previous claims. He argued that his earlier comments only referred to individual actions that people perform at their desks. Suleyman used to work for DeepMind, the research lab he co-founded in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, before he left in 2022 to establish Inflection AI and build an empathetic digital assistant. Microsoft hired him in March 2024 to lead its newly formed "Microsoft AI" division, placing him in charge of consumer products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge. His February comments also detailed plans for Microsoft to achieve self-sufficiency with a $140 billion infrastructure budget to train frontier models, predicting that creating a customized AI will soon feel like creating a podcast or a new blog: The 41-year-old is not the only AI executive who's softened his "AI will replace you" stance. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, last month used X to push back against employment panic by arguing that his startup builds tools to assist humans rather than build replacements. He had previously garnered backlash by suggesting that many modern office roles that AI might replace did not qualify as "real work" in the first place, at least when you compare desk jobs to physical, historical labor like farming.

    • Meta will now use data from outside businesses to personalize AI responses by David Uzondu In an update that's rolling out globally (except in a handful of countries), Meta will use your data from outside businesses to personalize your AI responses and your primary feeds. Meta already utilizes your shopping activity to target ads, but the company now plans to expand this tracking to personalize other "parts of your experience" like feed algorithms and AI assistant chats. The company is replacing the two settings ("Your activity off Meta technologies" and "Activity from other businesses") that currently let you disconnect off-platform activity with a single, renamed setting called Activity from other businesses. If you don't want Meta to manipulate your feed and AI responses using your outside history, you can just turn the Activity from other businesses setting off in your account settings. This toggle resides within your Accounts Center, applying your choice to every connected profile. Turning this off will not stop companies from sending your data to Meta. The company will still collect your web interactions, but it only uses them to train products, while still accessing external accounts you connect. When The Verge spoke to Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez, the representative said that this update will exclude several locations at launch, including the European region, the UK, Brazil, Thailand, South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Kenya. The new update comes at a time when the social media giant is recovering from a major PR disaster involving generative AI. Last week, there was a huge security issue on Instagram where attackers figured out a way to trick Meta AI into handing over account ownership (even if the victim had 2FA enabled). Some of the affected accounts include the dormant Obama White House profile, cosmetics brand Sephora, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, and security researcher Jane Manchun Wong. Internally, the company also had to scale back plans on its Model Capability Initiative (MCI), an employee-monitoring program designed to train corporate AI models by recording worker keystrokes and screen activity, after employees raised privacy concerns and complained about severe battery life drain.
