That proves it. People do use Unity.

I heard so many of my friends bashing it to hell. :/

I find it to be pretty good, currently my favorite interface to use on a laptop. You can find plenty of people bashing every DE/shell out there, just use whichever one you like best. Plenty of people use it and like it, but the loud minority would have you think its the worst desktop ever and that no one uses it :D I hear the same complaints about gnome-shell, but plenty of screenshots of people running that too!

I didn't use it on my old laptop purely due to performance issues, but now that it runs smooth as butter I love using it.

Ubuntu 12.10
I'm with Viper on this one. Unity has worked for me, and worked pretty well. Tried the rest and always keep coming back to it.

Back to Gnome to try out the latest version. Some new bugs on this new adventure, though. Same theme I always use in Gnome and XFCE: Posted Image

Would you mind sharing details on this please (background, icons, theme etc) ? It looks fantastic; simple yet stylish and functional. Also how do you get the terminal to display those details, what do I need to type?

It's as bad as OSX if not worse when it comes to productivity in my view. I find it totally obtrusive to work flow, gets in the way, clumsy and just plain awkward. I'm only putting up with it for the moment because the programming book I have uses ubuntu (and therefore uses ubutnu conventions) and I haven't had time to see if I can get a standard desktop back or be bothered to get what I need from the book using another distros specific commands.

Visually though Unity does look quite nice.

Sure. :) The wall is Minimal Stripes. The theme is Zukitwo by fellow Neowin member lassekongo83. The icons, though they are not seen here are Faenza. That app is called alsi, I got it from the AUR. Not sure if it exists for other distros, but it can probably be ported. If you happen to be using Arch, check it out. Here is the configuration page. I am fairly sure in this example I used, "alsi -l -c1=purple -c2=black -u -s".

I've been growing surprisingly fond of cinnamon. Moved my laptop over from ubuntu to mint 14 rc. I really like unity, but silly compiz bugs cropping up all over push me over the deep end :/. I'm amazed at how stable and bug free mint 14/cinnamon 1.6 is.

Away from my testing/distro-hopping partition...
This is my everyday, stable Linux install. My daily workhorse.

Yeah, I'm testing out Cinnamon atm. It's different, but less heavy than Gnome Shell.

Been using Arch as my go-to linux distro for a while. Been having problems since the Gnome 3.6 updates came along. The last update messed up my icons, however some google searching lead me to a solution. I had to recompile the nautilus source with an edited png, but it ended up working.

Using Cinnamon as the DE, with Gnome 3.6.x everything else (Nautlius, Theming, etc).
