SpaceX Grasshopper project (Updates)

1 post in this topic

Time for a breakout thread on this as test flights have commenced -

Grasshopper is SpaceX's development project for vertical take-off/vertical landing (VTOL) technologies, as in rockets that take off and land on their tails like in the 1950's sci-fi movies - just as God & Robert A. Heinlein intended.

This will have multiple applications from a fully reusable Falcon launcher, being loosely called Falcon RLV, to a Dragon derived spacecraft that can land without parachutes on Earth, the Moon, Mars or on smaller bodies like Ceres.

The project was announced about a year ago in conjunction with the release of what has become known as the 'Future' video, and recently the Grasshopper testbed has taken a couple of 'hops' - short flights to test its systems before much higher flights over the next 2-3 years.
