920 is an amazing phone!

Recommended Posts

Replaced an iPhone 4s and Samsung focus 2 and were loving it. Nokia really went balls out with the hardware and software. Performance and features are amazing, hope they market the crap out of it. Nokia maps 3d is nice, downloaded Texas maps and it got me where I needed to go. Nokia music is cool, Nokia lense is fun, will have to try that in another city to see what it recommends. App marketplace is really refined for ease of discovery, wallet is great, finally pin protected purchases across the board. The screen is amazing and experience is smooth and fluid. Nice hardware.

For those in the EU/UK etc, It looks like Clove UK has listed the white Lumia 920 as going on sale tomorrow the 13th! Nothing yet for other colors, as for price it's 650Euros.

did it come with a wireless charger?

It didn't come with a charger, but we have to send off for it.. apparently the wireless charging pads are in shorter supply than the phones. We actually got ours at HEB of all places. (a local grocery store) - All the ATT stores I called in Austin were flat out of inventory. HEB also didn't charge us the upgrade renewal fee :)

With that said, I didn't buy the 920 for wireless charging.. its nice but I bought the 920 because its a freaking amazing phone!

Is it amazing enough to convert an iPhone 5 user like me who has a lot invested in apps? I like everything Windows 8 and the 920 does look super sweet. iOS just seems to be getting stale despite the amount of apps I've bought.

I'd say so man.. If you're a resolution nut, the screen on the 920 is even sharper. If you're a social media nut the integration of twitter/facebook and such across the device just KILLS the nasty mess that is ios6 sharing. The performance is snappy, the marketplace has TONS of "discovery" paths to really find new apps and have fun. It syncs up with my windows 8 desktop and even my surface.. wifi performance is great and now that MS recently pulled off the wifi agreement you will have free wifi roaming almost everywhere. I wasn't much of an ios app nut myself, I had a few things I tinkered with but what I did want was a phone that made it easy to stay connected with my friends and family and boy howdy does the lumia 920 shine there - with the new groups feature, the (recently) released Skype update, facebook/twitter integration, people hub, skydrive integration.. love it.

and nokia throws in so many apps its not even funny. wife absolutely loves words with friends and nokia has a free version for 920 owners, same with draw something. nokia music is great (free) alternative to spotify (and spotify says their wp8 app will be out soon), xbox music works great, I have a music pass there I've had for years and its amazing. The Nokia Drive 3.0 just amazes me every time I use it with how quick/snappy it is and how detailed it is and how well nokia keeps on tweaking the crap out of it.

and ie10 us astoundingly fast for web surfing.. I mean, its nuts how fast this thing is.

I wonder how they're doing that because Phones4U have signed an exclusivity deal with Nokia and their SIM-free phones are locked to EE. Judging by the high price I wonder whether Clove are importing unlocked phones from outside the UK.

I dunno but so far they're the first I've seen to list a date and price for a unlocked 920. I'm still waiting for expansys to do the same but nothing. They only have the 820 listed for 525Euros from what I've seen.

I agree. I LOVE my 920. I'm coming from an iPhone 5, and am so glad I switched. It feels so fresh, fun, and it's fast! I hope Nokia really markets the heck out of this device, because it's a beast. A lot of my Apple friends are pretty impressed with it too.

What does this do that other smart phones don't?

An honest question, as I don't own any smart phone.

It's not so much that it does things other smartphones don't (or can't) - although there are some very unique things that Nokia has done on the hardware front... but I would say its integration with services and social networking services is what sets it apart.

It's really impossible for anyone to answer this for you beyond what I've already said that its a pleasure to use, deeply integrated and hugely satisfying. iOS pales in comparison to how consistent, smooth and integrated wp8 is and android just doesn't have any consistency at all across its platform either. Android has some nifty card features, but I expect we will see those two.

It really comes down to what you want, and the 920 delivers for me.

I just upgraded from an iphone 4s to the lumia 920. This phone rocks. I do not understand how the reviewers state the iphone 4s/iphone 5 takes better pictures. The lumia 920 takes much better pictures then an iphone. The screen is gorgeous . Also as a previous iphone user I am so glad this uses micro usb. no more of the proprietary cables. Also in the US at ATT it does come with the wireless charger but ATT is sending them to peoples homes because most stores never received any.

The only negative is that the back is very slippery . I am waiting for the Otterbox defender to come out for it(listed on website but not out yet).

I'd personally hold out now that Ive has an input on the design of iOS. I agree it's become a bit stale but personally think it's all going to change, he is Apple's most powerful resource and i'm sure he'll deliver something amazing.

I see. I certainly like the look of WP8 over ios or android.

Also another thing, how does the phone look and in feel in person?

I got the matte black, it looks and feels amazing. Screen is higher resolution than any other device I've seen, the weight and balance of the phone is amazing and its just big enough that it fits my hand and I can use my thumb to do everything. The colored 920's have a glossy finish, which i'm not too fond of.. wish they stuck with the finish that was on the 900s

You have to go to a store that has a demo unit yourself and try it. I like the weight of it. the phone is balanced in your hand. I have an iphone 4s and I feel its too light and thin. IF you have big hands you will like the look and feel.

I upgraded from the iPhone 4S to a red 920 and I will never look back! It is an absolutely gorgeous phone and simple to use. The social integration is amazing compared to Apple's offering. Even the simple act of downloading the free ringtone app and being able to get custom ringtones directly on the phone with no hassle and mess is what I missed so much using an iPhone. Even my buddy ordered one via the $49 Walmart special this weekend because he was so impressed with it compared to his iPhone. I can't wait to see what MS & Nokia pushes out in the coming months to make the phone even better. I highly recommend it to anyone that is looking to get one.

I ordered one, and I hope I didn't make a mistake. I have no use or interest in "social integration" as I don't bother with any of that. I mainly got it because I have an android phone, and I wanted to have another OS to play around on.

I am guessing I will have to "upgrade" to Windows 8 on a more permanent basis for PC integration as well... Not a big deal I guess, as long as there are ways to remove the unnecessary crap Microsoft loaded onto W8. I love the look of the OS on a phone or tablet, but not on the desktop.

But I really hope "social integration" isn't why this phone is being touted as amazing, otherwise it will be subpar next to my android phone. I have 14 days to try it out, so when it gets here I suppose I will find out myself.

    • The fact that memory in general is so high I have to take a loan out to build a computer now is just beyond stupid. Who's really to blame here? Low supply or high demand?
    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk. WACUP 1.99.51.24568 Preview changelog: Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when doing some of the drag + drop actions within the media library window Fixed a loading crash seen related to a problem with some of the artwork cache image files being restored which should now be better handled allowing for the bad image to be removed without it failing Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when the internal metadata cache clearing is triggered which could block the main ui thread for too long with this now being moved to a background thread Fixed some performance issues with some of the methods related to determining artwork support which mainly affected the local library import / refresh (this is still slower for some compared to other players because there's more data & artwork aspects being checked for which means doing more processing on a single file despite the best of attempts to reduce duplicate / heavy processing where possible) Fixed a crash with the JTFE based missing files hotkey which no one seems to have used for an age for this to appear (maybe it's time to seriously consider stripping out features that aren't being used) Fixed how some of the file types which use extra information to reference their sub-songs is handled which was preventing some from being correctly resolved back to their base file (noticed fixing above) Fixed an issue with the handling of files with underscores in their filepath which wasn't being correctly handled causing some of the filename to be lost when shown as the title if title reading is delayed Fixed a few things that might be behind NotSoDirect not being stable for some setups though am still not certain that the changes done for this are going to fully resolve the problem from the crash reports Fixed the OS toast handling when there's no prior shortcut in the OS start menu to now create the shortcut (needed to allow the yes/no buttons for the new build / post-release toast) to be done as a hidden one so it's less likely to cause annoyance for those not wanting to see it whilst still allowing this less than ideal OS api implementation requirement to be met to avoid toasts without the needed buttons Fixed a regression when moving from taglib1 to taglib2 which broke some of the handling in place to allow for external programs to still access files when wacup has a held open cached instance of the file Everything else Updated cppwinrt (gen_win10shell.dll) to 3.0.260520.1 (26 May 2026) Updated libcurl (libcurl.dll) to 8.2.1 (24 Jun 2026) Updated Monkey's Audio (in_ape.dll) to 13.15 (28 Jun 2026) Updated mpg123 (mpg123.dll) to 1.33.6 (6 Jun 2026) Updated OpenSSL (libcurl.dll) to 3.5.7 (9 Jun 2026) Updated pugixml to 1.16 (16 Jun 2026) Updated taglib (tag2.dll) to 2.3.0 (11 May 2026) Updated vgmstream (in_vgmstream.dll) to the latest Git commit from 28 Jun 2026 Download: WACUP 64-bit | 9.6 MB (Freeware) Download: WACUP 32-bit View: WACUP Website | Screenshots Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
