Windows 8 sales dissapointing

Microsoft's Windows 8 Sales Are 'Well Below Expectations' Inside The Company

Really bad news for Microsoft

Sales of its brand new operating system, Windows 8, are "well below projections," inside the company says Paul Thurott at Windows SuperSite.

Thurott is probably the most plugged-in Microsoft reporter. When he says something, you can trust it.

He says sales are being described internally as "disappointing."

Microsoft is blaming its PC partners for the slow start, says Thurott. His source blamed PC makers "inability to deliver".

Note this isn't a report about actual sales. It's a report on a rumor, published by someone who often gets upset with MS when they don't allow him more insider access. He then runs with a 'I have a source' type story, and then it gets published as news because he did used to get some useful information.

I am not surprised in the least. Windows 8 is a desktop disaster and too confusing for the average Joe and home user. The UI sucks. People do not like it and the sales show that. I have 3 customers who all bought new PCs this past week and 2 of then returned them because they simply can't understand the new Windows. The other one is having headaches.

What they should have done is make Windows 7 better and call it Windows 8, without changing its already usable and easy UI.

Pretty much this. The amount of times he was wrong with Windows 7 and WP7 was pretty laughable, but still people take him seriously.

too confusing my ass.

people no a days are just too lazy to even bother TRYING to figure out the new system, they'd much rather be spoon fed everything

it's rather despicable how stubborn and stuck in their ways humankind has become

Not everyone was born in this generation dude. You can't expect a 70 year old lady or man to understand something as technologically challenging as Windows 8.

windows 8 on a laptop or PC is a disaster. lot of w8 tablets out there and some look impressive but surface is no where near.

with general negativity towards w8 I completely agree with it. when w7 got released there was a huge positive sign. everyone praised w7. not so much with w8.

tons and tons of thread saying w8 is not good.

Everyone praised Windows 7? There were hundreds of threads about people claiming how XP is so much better. Hell even today there are people who still think XP is better.

This isn't anything new, everytime a new version of Windows comes out there's always a ton of people who claim the previous one is better and then those very same people will later claim the OS they originally hated was the best thing since sliced bread. Tons and tons of people hated XP when it released, called it childish, buggy etc and now suddenly XP is the best.

Over 4 million people did buy 8 on it's release weekend, and that's the highest it's ever been for an OS release. Yes you can claim well it was $15, but:

1. That thing was fixed so not everyone could do it.

2. The upgrade from Vista to 7 was free, the one from 7 to 8 was $15

3. Windows 7 had that house party thing which meant anyone could get a copy of Ultimate for free just for signing up on a website and doing nothing else.

Not everyone was born in this generation dude. You can't expect a 70 year old lady or man to understand something as technologically challenging as Windows 8.

there's hardly any difference besides the start button being hidden and the start menu being full screen. launching a program hasn't changed

move mouse to bottom left corner and click, click on program you want to open (how is that any more technologically challenging then 7 and back?)

edit: plus who in that age doesn't have a grandchild that can help them out when they have a question, and how often is someone that old going to be getting a new computer anyway (or a computer at all for that matter)?

Most everyone I know hates Windows 8 and avoids it like the plague. I've even see several Best Buy employees actively advising customers not to buy it for various reasons.

And honestly, I like Windows 8 much better since I installed Start8.

Best buy is also the company that told my wife her laptop was completely dead and there was nothing they could do to fix it (this is after charging her to take a look at it), when the only problem with it was the monitor cable had come loose.

I did the same Windows 8 and Start8, and eventually went back to Windows 7, but after going back I realize there was a lot of things about W8 that I liked. So I'm going back to W8, but without Start8, and am going to make myself use it for a week and see what happens. I'll either reinstall Start8 or Windows 7 again, so wish me luck or not, guess you guys really don't care how I use my computer. ;)

Best Buy employees are not the best people to listen to. I've often found myself in the PC section actually having to interrupt the employees and give a customer correct information on a product.

The BB employee would get huffy with me and start to tell me off...then I'd flash my work badge and they'd go cry in the corner. :p

I do wish you luck. I too like Windows 8. I'm just so use to a start menu that I can't seem to get along well with it. Plus, I hate metro apps. One day I think they may be good and useful, but that is not today.

See what I mean Growled. They are not exactly the people you to hold up as a paradigm of knowledge. They often don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

In fact back in the day they wouldn't hire me after I corrected a Geek Squad manager who was talking about a PC that was in there. He said it had to be some sort of custom one-off custom built PC that they wouldn't know how to fix.

It simply had a BTX motherboard in it...which while rare isn't any different to work on than an ATX board for the most part. I pointed that out and he was ****ed that I knew something he didn't. That interview ended quickly. :p

Oh, I know. I call it Worst Buy mostly these days because of the high prices and the general lack of knowledge among the associates. I'm just reporting what I've been seeing. And generally your average person doesn't know and relies on Worst Buy to tell them.

Why not just go to the App Apps section then and pretend that the rest of the Start Screen doesn't exist? Everything is still there :p

I actually call them that too lol...and usually while in the store. :p

I honestly can't wait till they go out of business lol.

All it takes is a rumor by someone who hasn't had such a good track record for the last few years to make the haters come out of the woodwork. So some of you guys are jumping on some rumor that you were all thirsting for, and using it to conclude that windows 8 is a flop, and are dismissing the actual facts that have been released.

Let me refresh your memories

-Ballmer stating Windows 8 better to a start than 7

-4 million upgrades only in 3 days, and according to previous Microsoft statements, windows users pretty much NEVER upgrade.

-CEO of channel analyst Context says Windows 8 is doing better than Windows 7 did at launch in the Europe IT channel, this is significant because the economy is even shittier now.

-Windows 8 surpassing android web presence in a week, and Linux web presence in a few weeks, and according to the trend, ios shouldn't be too far away, likely a month.

-Soluto statistics saying Windows 8 now accounts for %3 of PCs.

But noooo, all of a sudden the word of Paul Thurott is as good as gold. And what if he was right. Do any of you know what Microsofts projections were? Maybe they were projecting double Windows 7 sales. Maybe they prepared for this massive launch but were disappointed they didn't reach that level of sales because Intel ****ed them because they're having ****ty yields on the new atom chip and that's delayed OEMs from getting actual tablets and pcs on the shelves.

    • Limited time Prime Day deal cuts price of this Hisense 65" 4K smart TV in half by Ivan Jenic It’s Amazon Prime Day, and brands are offering great deals to consumers. One of the best deals of the day is definitely this Hisense 65" U7, which is currently $799.99 on Amazon, down from $1,499.99. That's nearly 50% off and $700 saved on this feature-packed 4K TV (purchase link down below). The U7 uses Mini-LED backlighting with up to 3,000 local dimming zones and up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness. That means blacks are truly deep and highlights are punchy enough to hold up even in bright rooms. The screen is covered with a dual-layer anti-reflection coating, which prevents the afternoon overhead lights from washing the picture. For gaming, the native 165Hz refresh rate and VRR 330 support make this one a great TV option for PS5 and Xbox Series X. The TV even features a native game mode, which should help minimize the input lag for a better gaming experience. Audio is handled by a 2.1.2 channel system tuned by Devialet, which is a notable partnership for a TV at this price. Additionally, Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Atmos, and IMAX Enhanced are all supported. It runs Fire TV with Alexa+ built in. So, if you’re looking for a sharp, large screen to watch the World Cup on, the U7 at this price is definitely an attractive option. Speaking of which, Hisense is the official sponsor of the World Cup, which should mean absolutely nothing to you, and isn’t the reason why you should by this TV. The reason why you should buy it is that it’s “la bella televisione, HDTV-compatible, beautiful,” and available at half the price. Hisense 65" U7 Mini-LED 4K Smart Fire TV - $799.99 | 47% off on Amazon Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • Re: Capitalism. It's just 1 of dozens of economic models currently-adopted worldwide; most national models separate money from politics thereby limiting the influence wealth carries over the economy (due to limited tentacles wealth politics has over the broader economy). The "American model" of unfettered financial influence should NOT be the variant of pure capitalism adopted worldwide. More regulations formulated within this variant is effectively useless due to the misalignment between regulatory objectives and fundamental influence wealth politics carry over the market. Re: enough money. Without constraining the breadth/depth/scope/scale that any measure of money/wealth can have within a market, there will always inherently be those who have "enough money" and those who do not. Those without "enough money" will always lose -- regardless if a bedroom DJ, indie developer, or million-dollar corporation going against a billion-dollar mega-corporation. The evil is the absence of guardrails against the influence of wealth; not the mere existence of wealth. Re: dragged through the courts. The liberalist nature of litigation does not exclude anyone, anywhere, for any reason for getting dragged through the courts. Rather than formalize remediation pathways for various perceived ills, everything is left up to flawed interpretations... and this is where a litigation-averse community fails to thrive (thus a losing proposition when dragged to courts). Everyone should have more protections and clear remediation strategies! Going to an alternate remediation arbitration is OK so long as the case review and remediation processes are clear and transparent. For corporations, hit them where it hurts: automatic financial penalties. (PS: This is where corporate risk management strategies would do well to behave more ethically.) Overall, failure to truly shake-up the incentive core and regulatory extremities of the economic market will necessarily mean that all other actions are simply applying lipstick on a pig. Change begins from the inside. Is the root cause of the problem that a majority of consumers within a market goes for Option Brand-name versus Option Indie? Or that brand-name is spending foreign money to control domestic markets? Or that money is the objective measure for success across all walks of life? Or that deep pockets dictate the moral and ethical rights/wrongs of entire societies? Regardless of the answer (and there's nothing inherently wrong with being a socialist or communist or whatever label your surroundings deem 'cool' or 'uncool') there's a common thread: If a market truly wants to nurture domestic innovation, then performative finger-wagging will do nothing to that end.
