What happened to Darkside theme?

Recommended Posts

Hmmm not sure if Timan is serious, but Darkside going away would stop me subscribing.

I do wish text wouldn't be grey on it sometimes though

Well knowing how IPB is with upgrades, if the skin requires little to no work, I'm sure we'll keep it. But we know that won't be the case. We're not going to just delete it, unless there is a reason. (Even tho I would love to :p)

Darkside will go away?

Da fuq is this?

Seriously guys, this is just insane.

Also, I couldn't care less about a feature discrepancy.

I love Darkside, and yes, Neowin is one of my most frequented websites.

I love how it's easier on the eyes and well... I could invest a lot more time into this post, but I think you won't not drop it either way, so why even bother.

This!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use darkside as the defaults on this site is far too bright and it effects my eyes, due to having an eyesight issue. The only issues I have with darkside is the users who force their text colour to black, but those users/posts I skip over anyway as I cannot read what they're saying (typing?) with it being black text on a black background.

As Nagisan said, I use dark backgrounds/wallpaper on my desktop etc to alleviate this issue, and most of the sites that I visit have a dark/light option for the site.

Midnight would probably be a second choice if the white background was dimmed a lot to about half intensity.

Between this and the apparent forced removal of the expanded front page (which I have raised a topic on but not had it fixed) are you trying to force people into not using the site?

[edit]

Darkside appears to have gone completely no from the front page, it is now far too bright. Has something changed in the last half hour or so?

Heh, darkside hasn't been on the main page in prob a year. Colors haven't changed either :p

weren't you also a fan of the pink theme at one time? :p

Yes, I'd love to get it.

Maybe like Darkside with pink and magenta mixed into it.

I'd definitely pay the team to make it happen :p

I should lighten the theme every week, see if anyone notices. Then in a few months time it'll look exactly like the default theme :p /me dev.troll

Cheeky ******!

I know you totally don't mean it that way, but I feel kind of urged to say something about staff loving to drop popular features:

I think it's a clear sign someone shouldn't be in a responsible position.

You should never love to drop a feature people need.

Love to not having to support something anymore that's time consuming in itself, sure, but not the whole thing, because the whole thing includes telling people: Well, sucks to be you, guys, but feature x is no more. Deal with it.

If that's easy for you, I sense there's something wrong.

Again, I don't know you too well, Timan, but I think I've read enough about you to know you're not an ******* so I think it's safe to say that you're a good guy and only would love the part about less work.

I surely hope though that Darkside's gonna stick around.

Basically, I cannot think of a better stereotypical irony than a tech site without a dark theme.

There is a huge difference in brightness levels of the default theme vs darkside. On the forum side I would like to keep darkside around if possible. It's actually been found that light text on dark backgrounds is easier to read against than dark text against light backgrounds.

Gonna chime in as another major Darkside fan. I frequent the forums a lot more than the main page, especially since the darker option has gone away there. It really is a lot nicer to view than all the bright crap, which is btw a big reason I am in no hurry to upgrade my Microsoft Office either. Huge white screen in a dark room, and against a dark wallpaper, is just painful.

I hate it when ergonomics take a backseat.

Absolutely agree here!

+1 for Darkside =)

I don't have problems with darkside - bar when people specify their own font colours (eg. when posting a news article, they post black text). Simple fix tho, I just select the font to read it...still burns my eyes, but hey =P

That fix doesn't work on my iPad at least. I wish the formatting could be removed for those that do that

I'm also an avid darkside user. As many have stated, it's just much easier on the eyes. I'd hate to see it go, but if it must, I suppose I could adapt.

It does suck if you've been on Neowin for a while, in a dark room, then you need to google something, it's like staring at the sun.

Why not you guys just use the Pegasus theme instead of the Darkside theme?

Because that's the exact Opposite of Darkside, and for some of us, it's hard on the eyes.. I don't like white pages with black text, it irritates my eyes..

I want to see Darkside remain, and return to the homepage.. Not like we want to force everyone to use it, we just want the option ourselves.

Stylish FTW!!!

Another Dark Sider here and Glassed Silver and many others have done a great deal explaining why.

Additionally, it is pretty evident that thanks to Dark Side I'm posting on the forums a lot more. Mainly because the forums are now comfortable to read so I read them more which leads to posting more.

My profile icon suits Darkside so nicely and I'm another supporter of the darkness as well! It not only looks amazing but again easier on the eyes.

    • Simple answer is yes, you will still get the Windows updates and as long as browser is up to date, you will be good. Only thing secure boot does is protect you against boot level threats and make it harder to install other OS's. I've been looking into this pretty thoroughly lately myself as wifes computer has secure boot disabled plus my other, older computers that run Linux, don't have secure boot enabled. Have seen all kinds of questions about this on the Linux Mint and MX Linux forums. Just don't suddenly enable secure boot now.

    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
