Entering into...the dark side (bought my first Android phone)

Recommended Posts

After battling the Google Play Store Server Boss for 3 hours I finally got my 16GB Nexus 4 ordered.

Looking forward to using it with my StraightTalk pre-pay plan.

Coming from iPhone. I'm afraid I'm going to regret it but will continue forward and keep my eyes opened. Would have loved to keep the iPhone but it came down to cost. I just can't justify spending $650-$700 for unlocked hardware and don't want to be locked into a contract that has an expensive monthly cost. Nexus 4 seemed like the right upgrade direction for me.

Was really wanting a competitive unlocked WP8 but didn't look like it was going to happen any time soon.

Congrats and welcome aboard! I hope you adjust quickly and enjoy it, the N4 is great :D

I love Android, but I will admit, I mostly had to comment because "the Google Play Store Server Boss" made me actually laugh aloud

I just swapped back over to Android myself after having used iOS since the 3gs. I have owned a 4, 4s, and 5, but finally had it with iOS and sold it and bought a Galaxy S3. Loving it so far. So much I can do with it

My FUD right now is just me obsessively worried that I won't like the battery life. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

For the most part I think I've already found apps to replace the ones I used on my iPhone. Maybe you can help me with the following:

* I use this one app called Momento that I have used as a after-the-fact reminder app. As in, after I pay a bill I will enter a short note like "Paid $176 Electric". It helps me so when I'm wondering when the last time I paid a bill I can look it up. There isn't much to it, and I can export the current database as a .CSV file. Anyone know of a good replacement for this?

* I'm also used to watching a bunch of podcasts on my iPhone. I would like to have quick easy access to the NBC Nightly News, Planet Money, and Democracy Now video podcasts. Any recommendations on how to accomplish that on Android?

* Any chance of ever being able to take advantage of the AirPlay features on my Apple TV from my phone again? It would be wonderful if there were some way to stream my music to my Apple TV. I know I'm jumping out of the ecosystem so there are some things I'm going to have to learn to leave behind.

Congrats and welcome aboard! I hope you adjust quickly and enjoy it, the N4 is great :D

Yeah, I was hoping for uber-loots and it looked like I got a good roll.

I've been using iOS since the 3GS and now I have an iPhone 4. I know people say iOS is stale and old but whenever I have seen or messed with Android I'm not overly impressed by it. Seems to all functionally be there. But my co-worker who has been a long time Android user has always complained about the battery life. Also my wife has an old EVO 4G on Sprint and the battery life of that thing is atrocious.

Congrats on the switch. Hopefully you won't regret it.

Hmm..yeah. I wonder what Google's return policy is...should have looked into it. Nexus 4s are selling high on eBay at the moment. I think if I don't like it I can always fall back to my iPhone 4. I'm hoping I like it though. I think I'll fall in love with how much faster it is than my iPhone. Quite a spec difference between the two...even though you can't really compare the operating system requirements against the specs. I should surely feel a difference coming from a single core 900some-odd MHz 512MB ram to a quad-core 1.5GHz 2GB of ram. And the camera also looks like a considerable upgrade.

They say Doggcatcher is the best Podcasting app. Which the great part about android is, at least stuff can download in the background at a certain time, were as on iOS you had to have to your phone unlocked and push a button to download.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll look into it :). If possible would you mind checking if the podcasts I've listed are available through Doggcatcher? I'm worried that the NBC Nightly News is an Apple iTMS exclusive.

Well, the "Podcasts" app that Apple has does actually have the option to download in the background. I think Apple reserves that feature for their 1st party apps...I don't think 3rd party apps can do that.

    • This Dell 27 inch 4K 120Hz IPS monitor is really cheap after a very long time by Sayan Sen Recently we covered a really good deal on an AMD RX 9070 three-fan model that's available at slightly above its MSRP. If you are looking for a GPU for 1440p gaming that's around the performance of the Nvidia RTX 5070 you should most definitely check it out. Let's say that you are looking for a monitor to pair that up with too. The Samsung 49" G9 curved QD-OLED superultrawide is a good option that can provide an immersive experience. However despite being a very good deal currently (at $855), it may seem unaffordable to you, or you may simply not want to spend as much on a monitor. In that case Dell's S2725QS can be a very good option as it's on sale at the moment for its lowest price in over six months (purchase link under the specs table down below). The big highlight of the Dell S2725QS is its 27-inch IPS panel with a 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) resolution, offering a high pixel density that can make text appear sharper while also providing plenty of screen space for productivity and media consumption. The display supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz through both HDMI and DisplayPort, making it suitable not only for everyday desktop use but also for smoother gaming and scrolling. AMD FreeSync Premium support is included as well, helping reduce screen tearing during gaming sessions. The screen has fairly good brightness and color accuracy so you can use it for general work purpose, though photo/video editing is probably not going to be the best match for this. The technical specs of the Dell S2725QS are given in the table below: Specification Value Viewable Screen Size 27 in (68.58 cm) Screen Mode 4K UHD Maximum Resolution 3840 × 2160 Maximum Preset Resolution 3840 × 2160 @ 120 Hz Standard Refresh Rate 120 Hz Panel Technology In-plane Switching (IPS) Backlight Technology LED Edgelight System Pixel Density 163 PPI Response Time 8 ms GTG, 5 ms GTG, 4 ms GTG Horizontal Viewing Angle 178° Vertical Viewing Angle 178° Brightness 350 cd/m² (nits) Native Contrast Ratio 1500:1 Color Support 1.07 Billion Colors Color Gamut 99% sRGB (CIE 1931) Adaptive Sync AMD FreeSync Premium HDCP Support Yes Mount Type Panel Mount VESA Mount 100 × 100 mm Maximum Height Adjustment 13 cm Tilt -5° to 21° Swivel -30° to 30° Pivot ±90° Stand Adjustments Tilt, Swivel, Height, Pivot Glass Hardness 3H Horizontal Frequency 27–270 kHz (DisplayPort 1.4 / HDMI 2.1) Vertical Frequency 48–120 Hz (DisplayPort 1.4 / HDMI 2.1) Video Inputs 2 × HDMI 2.1 (HDCP 1.4 & 2.3), 1 × DisplayPort 1.4 (HDCP 1.4 & 2.3) Operating Temperature 0°C to 40°C Storage Temperature -20°C to 60°C Operating Humidity 10%–80% (Non-condensing) Storage Humidity 5%–95% (Non-condensing) Get it at the link below: Dell S2725QS 27-inch 4K 120Hz IPS monitor: $218.49 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) (Was: $280) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • Looks almost like what our office provides us, excluding the leg rest for obvious reasons 😴
    • Forget the iPhone. What about Android? Most Samsung Galaxy phones sold in the USA are manufactured in Vietnam. Asian countries have the infrastructure that the USA doesn't have. This is why most electronics are not made in the USA
    • The RAM would still probably be more expensive than what they were paying last year.
