Appears VLC launched a kickstarter program to port over to Windows 8 Metro

Glad to see some Windows projects starting to take advantage of kickstarter!

Hell has frozen over, About time they ditched the windows media player 1.0 look wonder if they will add an integrated library for tagged files like xbox video

Man, you're in for a media manager, not a player.

VLC is a player, its "library feature" is just a little playlist on coffee (not acid, just plain coffee).

I've got a 22 hour flight coming up in two weeks and I'd love to have a full version of VLC on my Surface by then. Make it happen VideoLAN

I'm jelly now... I wanna have a long flight to somewhere nice, too! :(

I know what you mean about feeling like jelly as I haven't had a proper holiday in over a year.

I'm looking forward to reaching my destination but I'm not looking forward to the long flight. VLC on my Surface would definitely make it easier though ;)

I love flights.

I love long flights.

I love traveling by train.

I love long train journeys - my best one has been my longest one that took about 14 hours. (from my place to Pistoia, Italy (Florence region))

I love traveling in general. The more the better.

This proves there is a market for Windows 8 after all.

How does this prove it? I have VLC on my RPi, does that mean there is a market for RPi? I have seen KS Projects for completely absurd things, that actually have backers. I am not saying this is one, but a KS Project, or the fact that VLC will work on 8, means nothing about the market, especially for an OS.

Honestly, I didn't have the balls to point that out, because I try to stay more diplomatic around here now and don't get my head into discussing W8 anymore.

Yeah, I like long train journeys too. Especially long train journeys through Europe.

Flying does absolutely nothing for me unfortunately but maybe that's because I can only afford/justify paying for economy seats. 20+ hours in economy class isn't fun for me.

Off topic, but 22 hour flight...!? :s

London to Melbourne, Australia with a 2 hour change in Singapore. Last year I was stuck for 28 hours doing the return journey because of a storm over Abu Dhabi. I spent the whole time stuck on the plane with the exception of a 10 minute sprint between connections.

Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to Start Trek-style transporters

Just to play Devil's advocate, wouldn't the fact that teams are using a kickstarter project rather than just creating the application mean that they are testing the level of interest in their product, and seeing if it is worth the bother? Following on, wouldn't that mean that they are not sure about the popularity of Metro Apps (and possibly Windows 8) at this point in time?

That's what I got from this news article, anyway. The team aren't sure about the market for Windows 8 (or more specifically, Metro Apps) and don't want to "waste their time" building something that won't get used, so they've started this kickstarter project to find out.

Meh. If VLC doesn't get the funding, who cares? Some other media player can make a Metro app., and that's what people will start using. It would be beneficial if VLC made one regardless, that is if they want to keep market share.

True, there are already a couple of feature rich players in marketplace.. including one that supports mkv and is almost getting DTS to work. Windows 8 doesn't have to rely upon the old hats anymore..

So there is an app that can play MKV now in Windows Store? does it work on ARM/Surface RT too?

Free trial too. Still look forward to vlc though!

There are a couple. I was playing around with mobile.HD last night but the lack of support for DTS sound prevented most of my mkv files from playing. I tried another (but can't remember what it is called right now) and it played all my mkv files without any problems.

Do a search for mkv in the Windows Store and you will be able to see all the apps that support mkv playback.

    • iPhone 18 Pro drop-test video and photos leak on the dark web following a data breach by Hamid Ganji iPhone 17 Pro - Image via Apple Apple is seemingly facing one of the biggest data breaches in its history, and just a few months before the official debut of the iPhone 18 Pro series, photos, a drop-test video, a supplier list, and key phone components have reportedly been leaked by hackers. Last week, we reported that Tata Electronics, an Apple supplier and iPhone producer in India, was hit by a data breach. As a result, it was reported that more than 200,000 trade secrets and confidential documents belonging to Apple and Tesla were stolen by the ransomware group World Leaks. According to Reuters, the group has now leaked supplier lists, component details, and photos of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models on the dark web. One of the materials leaked by the hackers is a drop-test video of the iPhone 18 Pro, which is due to launch this September. The phone is shown in a gray color and has the same familiar design we saw on last year's iPhone 17 Pro series. The device also appears to be quite durable, though it seems to be thicker than last year's model. One possible explanation is that Apple may be using a larger battery in the iPhone 18 Pro series. Moreover, Reuters says it has seen at least six documents mapping many components in the iPhone 18 Pro models to their respective suppliers, including details on chips on the main circuit board and on battery and camera components. The documents reportedly detail hundreds of parts that will be used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. A person familiar with the matter told the outlet that Apple classifies this data as sensitive and “is concerned about the documents being shared on the dark web as they relate to unreleased models.” Apple is reportedly investigating the issue but has yet to issue an official statement.
    • You do you, I've just said that it first appeared in "home" version before it will be available in "work" one. I use Edge only because it still supports MV2 uBO extension even on Android - I'll switch when they stop.
    • I imagine that was a review or something? My reviews mostly contain a lot of images and galleries, but these are all webp too, but yeah it all adds up on the page load. Would help if you were more helpful with your critique instead of bitching and moaning like a Karen 😂 Because then we might be able to fix it for you.
    • If Valve refused to let them make the case, I wonder if they've already partnered with someone else to do it? The fact that they didn't seek permission/licence before diving straight in is incredible though
