Apple attempts to trademark the LEAF

Recommended Posts

If you thought Apple patenting the rectangle was a gratuitous abuse of intellectual property, you may be pained to hear that Apple has now applied to trademark a leaf.

Specifically, Apple wants to protect the leaf on its company logo. Apple applied for to the European Trademark Registry on 3 December, with the help of London lawyers from Edwards Wildman.

The title is for teh lolz

I'm far from an apple supporter, but first of all there is a big difference between trade marking and pattenting and secondly, they are trademarking that very specific leaf. Not all kind of leafs.

Alright, edited the title. It was a bit of a bad attempt at a joke anyway (on how most comments on neowin are based on the title alone).

Err... what's wrong with this? What do you think the point of trademarking is?

This is no different than Nike, Microsoft, Intel, etc having trademarks on their logos.

Seems like some people get instantly butt-hurt as soon as the word "Apple" is brought up.

Actually, there's a big difference. Apple trademarking a part of their logo.

they are trademarking that very specific leaf. Not all kind of leafs.

This has *NEVER* stopped Apple from going after any uses of any apples in logos and all they have is a specific design trademarked for that, too.

You got an apple on your nose!

So? There's nothing wrong with a company trademarking their logo, all parts included...

No one should object to Apple trademarking their logo, but trademarking individual parts is questionable. After all, Microsoft's new logo is 4 squares, followed by their name.

Would you object to them trademarking each of the squares individually, and also the letters M, i, c, and so on?

Microsoft confirmed June 23, 2026, that its Fairwater campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is fully operational — and the engineering behind it makes the facility something fundamentally different from every data center that came before it. Where conventional cloud infrastructure racks up general-purpose servers and parcels out workloads to each one independently, Fairwater links hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell GPUs into a single, coherent cluster using a two-story building design, 800-gigabit-per-second Ethernet fabric, and a proprietary networking protocol co-developed with OpenAI and NVIDIA. The result, according to Microsoft, is the closest thing to a purpose-built AI supercomputer that any company has ever placed in commercial operation. https://www.techtimes.com/articles/319205/20260627/microsoft-opens-fairwater-wisconsin-ai-campus-runs-one-supercomputer-via-800g-ethernet.htm
