Coca Cola uses Aspartame in its' Diet Coke line.. by feeding the ecoli virus and when it defecates, it leaves a sweet white powder. GD Searle Corp under Don Rumsfeld got it forced through the FDA as a safe sweetener.

why can't they use something like stevia?

They are, starting in Australia with Pepsi Next - which uses stevia. One problem with it is that in a very few people stevia has a slight bitter aftertaste. The solution for this comes from a company who makes a "bitter blocker" that can be added to the stevia.

Appeal to authority, Dr. Joseph Mercola can prove his claim or shut the hell up.

If someone is learning to drive and takes 30 times to pass their test, chances are they didn't improve - they got lucky.
That's a bit like aspartame trying to get approval for something like 25 consecutive years, being rejected until suddenly, the whole FDA team gets fired and replaced and it mAgIcAlLY gets approval.

Agricultural subsidies. They use it because with them, it's cheaper than sugar.

I thought there was some law in effect that forced their hand on using corn syrup over there.
