Broadcom referring to 802.11ac as "5G WiFi"

Recommended Posts

Where does it say that Apple will use that as the marketing name?

The image which says "5G WiFi" is a marketing image from Broadcom, not Apple.

Either way whoever came up with it needs to pick something else, this will just confuse people later.

I have a 5g and a 4g phone, is that 4g or 4g-lte, no no its 5g and wireless n, wait what?

Pretty sad there are some people in here flipping off the hook about this...

Nowhere does it show that Apple is referring to it as such.

In fact, it's actually Broadcom that came up with the term... http://www.5gwifi.org/

Try again?...

I don't care who came up with it. I just thought it was funny about the wireless-ac and stupid people comment. So I responded to that.

Surely it is 5th generation though?

1: 802.11a

2: 802.11b

3: 802.11g

4: 802.11n

5: 802.11ac?

I know its cool to hate on Apple, but come on you are scraping the barrel a bit there.

Even though(or maybe especially since) it isn't Apple who is actually referring to it as 5G. I think for 99% of users 5th Generation WiFi makes a lot more sens than ac and I'm sure 6th gen will make a lot more sense than whatever is next.

I never care about about marketed names; the only thing that should matter is whether a device supports standards I need or not.

No one ever refers to WiFi standards by generation number. The attempt here is to fool customers by confusing WiFi standards with LTE.

"Oh did you hear Apple has 5G now. Android is still only 4G." I can hear it already.

This is not a marketing image from Apple.

And 5G makes more sense than ac to most consumers anyway

not really, especially when it's already considered by most consumers to have to do with cellphone speed and nothing with wifi

Broadcom is the one referring to 802.11ac as "5G": http://www.5gwifi.org/

It seems like a marketing name to me. I don't think it's a good idea to refer to it as 5G because customers will most likely assume it's the successor to LTE (often referred to as 4G). The problem with that is one is a wireless networking standard and the other is a mobile broadband communication standard.

    • Very fitting name since AI users have air where there brains should be.
    • Yes, it was amusing at the time because even then dbrand was well known for stealing the designs of products from other companies. That’s what they do.
