Broadcom referring to 802.11ac as "5G WiFi"

Recommended Posts

No one ever refers to WiFi standards by generation number. The attempt here is to fool customers by confusing WiFi standards with LTE.

"Oh did you hear Apple has 5G now. Android is still only 4G." I can hear it already.

But the 5G name is from Broadcom and they supply chips in all sorts of phones, Apple and Android.

non-news. Broadcom is referring to this as 5G and since Broadcom doesn't sell directly to consumers it is a non-issue. I'm sure the iPhone engineers will know the difference between the 5G WiFi and 5G cell technology. Apple will more than likely call it AC or whatever else is common for consumers.

Where does it say that Apple will use that as the marketing name?

The image which says "5G WiFi" is a marketing image from Broadcom, not Apple.

Eeeeeeeeeeeee! You clicked on the article and made an informed comment instead of an ignorant one . That's not allowed around here. Mods!

Bit of a stretch, but ok...

Broadcom has been referring to its 802.11ac chips as 5G WiFi solutions for almost a year now.

Now that there are rumours of Apple using these chips though, we should all just blame them for it. We'll also skip over the fact that the article only refers to the Mac lineup getting the chips initially, rather than iPhones, which aren't mentioned anywhere in it. Bleat on, anti-Apple sheeple.

Not that I'm pro or anti Apple, no dog in the fight, but I did notice that these are for Macs and not iPhones.

Of course, the populace at large aren't hip to all the cool techy lingo, and if they hear 5G they will think phone.

    • Ridiculous claim that the labor cost difference of $6000 annually would increase cost per phone by $200. The employees produce 3 phones per month or what?
