January 31st aiming to be official start of Windows Phone 7.8 update program by Microsoft

EZZAU52.png

Although Microsoft itself has been officially mum on when the Windows Phone 7.8 update will go out to the masses, the end of January is coming into focus as the target date.

On the face of it, Windows Phone 7.8 is a minor update bringing only the ability to use three different size tiles on the Start screen, reflecting the Windows Phone 8 paradigm in addition to some smaller, device specific enhancements. But based user experience, 7.8 really does make a difference in perception, making older devices feel more modern.

I wonder if my old lg optimus 7 will get it since lg is being so meh about supporting their devices.

Other people with LG are reporting that they are getting it, have you tried the cable trick with Zune?

I actually gave the phone to my sister since she wanted it, I'll have to check with her latter to see if she got it. She's away though so it might take a few days.

Very keen to get the HTC Mozart update! I'm on Three but with an unlocked / unbranded handset which I bought myself.

Unbranded phones should get it because it isn't blocked by a carrier. Unless htc doesn't want to push it out for some reason.

Someone I know got update to his HTC Radar by using the Zune-turn-off-network trick. Might want to try that out...

How did you update your Focus Baji? I'm feeling impatient for some reason and debating just loading the 'clean' ROM or is the Zune trick still the easier method? (Curious how/if I need to backup the OEM ROM for when ATT gets off their butts)

Should I worry about a backup of the OEM image/ROM? I have some 710's I'll attempt on first since they are EOL'd anyway but more worried bout bricking my beloved Zune player. ;)

You can download all the stock / OEM ROMs from Navifirm Plus anyway, there is a way to unlock the bootloader of all 710s and a method to easily flash any stock ROM too, all on XDA

Thanks, I was debating a custom ROM but I'll try the SevenEighter if I can still restore via the other method.

It won't be a restore where you can keep apps and data, it will be a clean flash if you want to flash any other ROM from XDA or NaviFirm Plus

But yea you can go back to any ROM you want

If you do, make sure when the PC asks if you want to format the drive on the phone, hit CANCEL or your phone is as good as dead and needs soldering and reflashing from Nokia / Phone repair shops

Thanks for this! It appears to be working for my HTC Trophy, hopefully it doesn't take too long to update.

HTC stated when I contacted them the following message regarding 7.8 update

Regarding the 7.8 update, at this time, HTC does not have plans to deliver a Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade.

I guess NO update for my HTC Surround Windows Phone 7.5 to 7.8 ever

Carrier: at&T

    • Didn’t Dbrand once complain that Casetify was ripping off their designs a well? seems pretty bad of them to try and get around Valve’s copyright this way with that in mind.
    • Dbrand thought they could get away with this Steam Machine case, Valve disagreed by David Uzondu Image via Dbrand Dbrand has cancelled its highly anticipated Companion Cube enclosure for the Valve Steam Machine, which it teased back in November of last year with a concept render and sign-up page, because it did not ask Valve for permission first before manufacturing the case. According to Dbrand, it took the "backwards approach" of building the product first before asking for permission from the copyright holder. Seven months of work went into the project, requiring over a thousand engineering hours from the design team. Workers developed forty-four sets of injection molding tools, making a unique mold for each sub-component of the crate. When the Companion Cube went live on Monday last week, it, according to Dbrand, quickly became the second-fastest-selling product in the company's fifteen-year history, racking up orders for hundreds of thousands of units. Customers eagerly bought the $129.95 deluxe edition or the bare-bones $99.95 version, which the manufacturer cheekily branded as the "Poverty Cube". It was around this time that the legal eagles at Valve descended on the accessory maker with a formal demand. The developer pointed out that the iconic block design remains protected intellectual property from the game Portal, so unlicensed sales had to stop. Dbrand said that all its pleas to salvage the project with the Valve team, including proposals to run a properly licensed release under official terms "with their blessing", fell on deaf ears, so it had no choice but to obey and remove every trace of the product from the internet. If you bought the enclosure, the company said that banks will process your refund by the end of this week, but if it still hasn't arrived in your account by then, you should not hesitate to contact support. The Steam Machine itself is a high-performance console that Valve designed directly to bring PC gaming into the living room. It was announced on 12th November 2025 (the same day Dbrand announced the Cube) and runs on the Linux-based SteamOS, the same OS that powers the Steam Deck. As for the price, due to the shortage of memory and storage chips, the hardware cost landed much higher than people were expecting, starting at $1,049 for the 512 model (without a controller) or $1,128 with the new gamepad. The premium 2 TB model pushes those prices even higher, selling at $1,349 for the standalone console and hitting $1,428 if you want the bundle.
    • It's listed #399.99 on Amazon, per your link. It's not $299.99.
