Semen quality is a much-discussed subject among scientists these days. Data suggests sperm concentration has been declining in Western countries over the past couple of decades - and reasons for the decline are debatable.

The lead author of a new study on the subject, Audrey Gaskins, has been studying the effects of diet and exercise on semen for several years as a doctoral candidate at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her latest research shows a lack of physical activity ? and too much time in front of the television - may impact sperm count and concentration.

Previous studies have shown a link between physical activity and decreased levels of oxidative stress, Gaskins says. ?Oxidative stress? is stress placed on the body as it tries to get rid of free radicals or repair the damage caused by them. Exercise may protect certain male cells from oxidative damage, Gaskins says, leading to increased sperm concentration.

Men who did moderate to vigorous exercise 15 hours or more per week had a significantly higher sperm concentration than those who worked out less than five hours a week. And the men who watched more than 20 hours of TV a week had almost half the sperm concentration as the men who watched zero hours a week.

Those findings led Gaskins to complete an observational study on young men?s exercise and TV habits as they relate to semen quality. The results were published online Monday in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

And what is the reason ?

Spermatozoons all decide to colectively kill themselves after realising TV shows are now for the most part crap and the good ones get axed after one season ?

My bet: overheating.

The testicles have to be kept at a lower than body temperature for sperm development to progress normally, which is why men have a scrotum instead of internalizing them.

It's possible that sitting on a foam & fabric cushion for hours at a time not only presses the testicles closer to the body but it also insulates them, raising their internal temperature. Not good as regards sperm development.

Also contributing factors are TV Channels such as MTV, E! & SyFy too name a few, with TV shows like Jersey Shore and Keeping up with the Kardashians along with non stop WWE Wrestling.

And what is the reason ?

A male body needs testosterone to produce sperm.

Testosterone is derived from cholesterol. The primary source for cholesterol is meat/fish.

In order for the body to convert cholesterol to testosterone, our muscles need to be working - we must be walking, running, jumping - doing all sorts of physical activities to stay healthy.

Accordingly, seating on a couch in front of a TV gives zero work to our muscles => testosterone isn't produced => sperm count is lowered.

You are right. Wearing tight jeans is another hazard for the males because of the testicular overheating.

Similar security fixes also came with the latest update to macOS Tahoe 26.5.2, which Apple released on the same day. That overlap is not surprising, since Safari, WebKit, WebRTC, and other underlying components are shared across Apple’s platforms. Users are advised to update their devices sooner rather than later as these security fixes are crucial. iOS 26.5.2 can be installed from Settings > General > Software Update. Similarly, Mac users can find macOS Tahoe 26.5.2 through System Settings > General > Software Update.
