HBO orders gay-themed dramedy series starring 'Glee's' Jonathan Groff
HBO has ordered up eight episodes of a new gay-themed dramedy series with Broadway star and Glee actor Jonathan Groff taking the lead role of Patrick. Set to air in 2014, the yet-to-be titled series will revolve around three friends in San Francisco who are exploring “the fun and sometimes overwhelming options available to a new generation of gay men.” Also starring in the project will be Frankie J. Alvarez (from the recently cancelled NBC series Smash) and Murray Bartlett (Guiding Light).
The project hails from director Andrew Haigh, who helmed the pilot based on Michael Lannan’s feature script Lorimer. Sarah Condon (Bored to Death) and David Marshall Grant (Brothers and Sisters) will executive produce the series, alongside Haigh, with Lannan receiving a co-EP credit.
Groff is known best for his role as Jesse St. James on Glee, but his television credits also include appearing on season 2 of Starz ill-fated Boss, The Good Wife, and a recurring role on One Life to Live in 2007. Groff will also be appearing as a love-interest to Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch in another HBO project, A Normal Heart, which is being directed by Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy.
