Colombo, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- When 58-year-old G. Siripala, a Sri Lankan prisoner serving a 10-year sentence for theft, was escorted by armed prison officials to Colombo's National Hospital with severe back pain, doctors rushed him for an X-ray.

Doctors thought he might have orthopaedic complications, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. "But the X-ray showed a cell phone and two hands-free kits."

Medical staff prepared to carry out a surgical procedure on the prisoner, the source said.

"However, the man said 'Sir, sir, please give me a moment.' He coughed, wriggled, shrugged his muscles and the items fell on the ground," the source said.

The awkward incident reveals how Sri Lanka's prison officials discovered the latest round of phone smuggling into the high security Welikade Prison, in the northern sector of the capital, Colombo.

The prisoner explained his situation to the doctors, recounting how had been chatting on the cell phone with a relative when prison officials carried out a surprise check on his ward, the source said.

"He had no place to hide it. So he thrust it in his rectum together with the two hands-free kits," he said of the prisoner.

At nighttime, to avoid detection, the prisoners cover themselves with a bed sheet, hide the phone near the body and use the hands free kit, the source added.

Siripala's undoing came when the person he had been speaking to rang back. The ringing tone came from his back and prison officials grabbed him, the source said.

The prisoner alleges he was beaten by prison guards, causing the back pain that resulted in his trip to hospital and subsequent X-ray.

History repeats

7 Prisoners Have Surgery To Remove Cellphones Stuck ?Up There?

37 prisoners in a Pakistan jail were caught hiding cellphones inside their bodies?presumably their rectums. And for 30 of said prisoners, life continued as normal once the phones were removed. But for an unlucky 7, those stuffing themselves with smartphones, nature couldn't take its course. So they underwent surgery.Upon discharge (the prisoners from the hospital, not the cellphones from the butts), the prisoners will be moved to special punishment cells for their actions. And it just goes to show, while push email sure is nice and Wi-Fi browsing can come in handy, it's all no replacement for a good sit. [dialaphone]

Funniest thing is, a prisoner rings someone most likely he knows, quickly hangs up the phone shoves the bits up his ass then the person thinks oh he must have ran out of credit ill phone him up to see what possibly could of happened hahaha

I'm fairly sure my Samsung wouldn't fit, and I'm not going to find out.

And as long as the public isn't paying for the cell phone, I don't see the harm of inmates having them.

Unless it would lead to fights, stabbings, etc.

My question is how the hell it got in there. It's hard enough putting body parts or specially made "products" in there without some coaxing/intervention. Putting a mobile in there in a pinch? Must look like a cavern. "HELLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......ooooo.........oooooo....oooo".

And as long as the public isn't paying for the cell phone, I don't see the harm of inmates having them.

:s They would be able to do "business" and they could ring up a friend and tell them to go after xyz person for zxy reason.

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).
