Apple reportedly testing iWatch

Apple is again being tipped with the development of a smart watch, with the New York Times the latest to report that an 'iWatch' project is part of the Cupertino-based firm's ongoing plans.

Citing "people familiar with the company's explorations," the Times claims that Apple is currently "experimenting" with watch-like devices running a stripped down version of its iOS platform.

The report tips the iWatch to feature Corning's flexible Willow Glass to help it wrap around the user's wrist, with navigation, contactless payments and communications thought to be among the future contraption's uses.

"You can certainly make it wrap around a cylindrical object and that could be someone's wrist. Right now, if I tried to make something that looked like a watch, that could be done using this flexible glass," noted Pete Bocko, Corning's chief technology officer.

In addition to the Times, the Wall Street Journal has also jumped on the iWatch bandwagon, saying that Apple is currently discussing production scenarios with Chinese manufacturing partner Foxconn.

An Apple iWatch was rumored back in December 2012, with speculation pointing to a Bluetooth-enabled device with a 1.5in touchscreen display and Siri functionality.

I am sure Apple will take credit for creating the first smart watch and then call it revolutionary and innovative. Would be a dumb move by Apple to make a watch like this. I do not know anyone, cept my dad, that still wears a watch. I may wear one for special events, but its a normal watch.

There just isnt a need for something like this. Why look at a watch when looking at your phone is just as easy.

Well at least it's a "new" product and not an evolution of something else. I'm not sure I can really see a market for this outside of the more geeky sorts and tech enthusiasts but should be interesting all the same. Presumably they saw the stampede for the Pebble project on Kickstarter and thought they wanted a slice of that action!

I believe for these watches (not just this watch, these other "smart" watches as well), to have any real true function, they need to be paired with your smart phone.

To be paired with your smart phone, that means your smart phone needs to be on your person.

If your smart phone is on your person, how ****ing lazy do you have to be to not grab it and do whatever it is you are looking towards this watch to do?

My point being, this is truly the dumbest technology I have ever seen.

probably missing one important feature that they'll include in the iWatch 2, like being able to tell the time...

lol...iWatch1 tells you time to the hour.

iWatch2 REVOLUTIONARY - SEE TIME TO THE MINUTE!

Quick, Get Jony Ive to make a video about "fit and finish" and don't forget to mention chamfer somewhere in the talk.

Pretty lazy. :)

The only instance I can think of where a watch that links to your phone would be useful for me is at work. I like to keep my phone in my pocket, and since checking my wrist for the time is already natural, glancing at it to see who is calling or texting would be easier than fishing the phone out of my pocket. That's why I've been kind of eyeing the Pebble. I could leave the phone on my desk, but I have a tendency to walk off without it. :(

Nailed it

There are 2 reasons you would want to wear a watch.

1. Because you want to tell time but don't want to really look at the phone all the time (rare these days because most people that fit in this category will just have time on their phones)

2. People who appreciate watches like I do and wear them as prestige thing and jewelry really and appreciate the craft of watchmaking that goes into these pieces of art really..

I don't see how iWatch will cater to either of these crowds. It just seems incredibly stupid.

Someone like me who has Breitling watches and wears at worst (Invicta higher end or TagHauer as my daily drivers), I wouldn't be caught dead wearing an iWatch. It just reeks nerd without any clear benefit.

    • Keep in mind Intuit has lobbied like crazy to keep taxes complicated so they can continue to sell tax software. They also got caught hiding their legally mandated free version so they could release a second one that pushed countless people into charges they didn't need to pay to file. Intuit leads the charge on inventing problems so they can sell you the solution and disrespecting you in the process.
    • Oddly, there was a time that UFC games were culturally relevant, largely because of the graphics and gameplay that was different than the norm. But it seems like as the sport grew in popularity, gaming outlets stopped talking about the games.
