WSJ: Google working on touchscreen Chromebooks for 2013

Recommended Posts

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google has developed Chrome OS laptops with touchscreens. According to the Journal's sources, the Chromebooks will go on sale later this year, though there aren't any details on which hardware manufacturers are working with Google. Last year the company started selling Chromebooks by Samsung and Acer directly through the Google Play Store. The rumored Chromebook Pixel

A touchscreen Chromebook would likely require significant alterations to Chrome OS, which uses a desktop-style interface built around Google's Chrome browser and designed for a mouse and keyboard. The touchscreen laptops would mean Google offered two touch-based operating systems; it's unclear how the company would position the new products against existing Android tablets.

Keep the topic clean please.

maybe i will try chromebook. windows 8(surface pro) seems to be a failure. at least i will save some money.

Have been hearing some good things about chromebook

First of all, Windows 8 is much more than just Surface Pro. There are many other tablets to choose from, with many other (and sometimes better) docking solutions.

Second, if Windows 8 is a failure, Chromebooks are an epic catastrophe. Very low marketshare, not very powerful... it's like Google said "Let's make netbooks, but make them even less powerful and less useful".

Third, it's unclear why Google wouldn't just put Android on touch-enabled Chromebooks. Why two different operating systems? Why is Chrome OS even needed... why didn't they add this functionality to Android instead? Why can't you dock your Android tablet with a keyboard and mouse and get Chrome OS?

Finally, if a Chromebook fulfills all your needs, so would a Windows RT-based tablet (or laptop) like the Surface RT... and you'd get that long battery life and cheaper prices.

^ Chromebooks start at $199, I'd Like to see these cheaper RT devices you speak of.

You're right. But that's not what I meant. I was talking about cheaper prices vs full Windows 8 devices.

Is microsoft using wp8 OS on PC? why didnt ms do it? thats the stupidest question ever.

They might as well could have - the interfaces are the same, the underlying c# for apps is pretty much the same, it uses the same Windows NT kernel on wp8, windows 8 and windows rt.

The reason google isn't using android simply is the majority of apps written for android do not even scale up to display right on 1920x1080 tablet screens. What do you think those apps would look like on a chromebook with a higher sized screen, not even including one that is 2560x1700 - you will see every single pixel and all apps will look like garbage. Android at this point is held up to backwards compatibility and a legacy of applications that cant scale up correctly to higher resolutions.

ChromeOS is a failure and this Pixel laptop will be a bigger failure than Google+ and Google wave is.

The Pixel costs $1,299 for a Wi-Fi-only version and $1,449 for a version that also includes built-in LTE wireless technology so people can use it on the go.

    • I like mesh chairs like this, but not being able to lock in the back would make it not work for me. Also, I don't like arm rests at all. Can you not install them and the chair still work? Any recommendations on alternative chairs?
    • As before, my notes are in your quoted section. To be clear, you started posting racist, fascist nonsense. And I always challenge lies and the liars that peddle them. Why? Because the truth matters.
    • Deal for those who want 1900 size electronics in their house? with 2026/7 hardware mhm.. not nice
    • Cheap labour, the same as the U.K. China pays their people pittance.
    • Those people that come over here on boats are already in a safe country, if they want to come over here then do so correctly though the right channels. I was born in the U.K, my family that came over here came so via the proper means. My partner came here via the correct channels, she also became a British citizen, she knows more about this country than most of them that was born here, including myself, she worked hard to do what she does. She will stick up for this country and have done a few times, when people from her own part of world have put the U.K down. We are not going to agree, all I said to start with is that maybe Trump has the right idea with this America first thing and maybe we should start doing the same. Maybe not as drastic as what he is doing, but we do need to sort this country out, we need to sort out tech instead of relying on the U.S and others. Again you have not shown why you are so annoyed that we have left the E.U and this is what it is all about? If you don't live in the U.K and live in the E.U are you annoyed that we left your little club? If you live in the U.K and is pro-E.U, then fair enough then I can see how it annoys you. Are you one of these people who lives in the U.K and have a holiday chalet in the E.U and can now only stay there for so long? If so, then that is bad luck. As I have posted before, I have no problem with people coming here to work, as long as they do if via the proper channels. We are out of the E.U, people voted out, and maybe if more people had voted instead of sitting on their backsides the results would have been different. But they like the E.U and our government thought no we would not vote to leave. How wrong they were, surprised me. I expected to wake up in the morning and hear on the radio that we voted to stay. As I said, we are out and have been for 10 years, we are not going to go back in anytime soon if we ever do, so we all need to make the best of how things are. Anyway, this is supposed to be a tech site.
