Well not really, if I went and slapped the windows logo on something I sell without permission, I'd expect to be sued.

That's different though since the Windows logo is legally trademarked. This KDE artwork probably isn't.

Ethically it's wrong, but legally it's probably not.

its silly over just an icon.

if you visit Linux mint website you don't see them saying " hey thanks Ubuntu "

or UBUNTU under the hood . lol

if so you really need to search the site to find out.

point is its silly and either side is making money from it

do you have a source that shows how much money sony has made from the use of that icon ?

lmfao.. they are using their work on their website to sell laptops.. no different than someone using a song on a commercial without playing the artist.

KDE had Aero before Windows did. KDE 4.0 (released 2006...Vista was 2007 if I remember right) had Aero like boarders. Compiz (the window decorator) has been around, in one form or another since the early 00's.

KDE 4.0 was released in 2008.

Nope. Just because you are running something on top of an open source kernel, does not mean that what it is you are running needs to follow the same licensing.

The following example doesn't directly apply, but, for example if you create artwork inside GIMP (an "open source" image editor) the artwork is yours and not required to be "open" or "free".

There are pay-for Linux distributions that come with proprietary software. I can't think of any recent ones, but in the past RedHat had their "enterprise" Linux distribution, Novell had their SuSE with netware administrator software, there was also that Windows knock up (WinSpire or something) and the desktop manager that came with was not open source. Mac OS X's core is Darwin (BSD distribution) which is open source, but the rest of what is included with Mac OS X (like the 'windows manager') is definitely not open source.

Stiil-- A start Menu is a Start Menu, A System Trey is a System trey, etc. There's only so many ways you can make a UI without getting crazy. KDE vs Windows is night and day when you get down to the meat of the potatos. The start menus function differently, the system tray behaves differently, ect. They have similar elements and theorys--but they are not copying any part of Windows by any means.

The above example is a blatant copy of KDE's sys icon. They didn't even try to change the color of the handle or the shadeing, the tools used in the intersect, ect. They copyed and pasted it withoput asking permission or at the very least giving credit to the artist.

The way I see it you simply cannot argue KDE didn't copy Aero Peek (to name one thing) and OS X' Mission Control shows you can in fact come up with a different implentation, but let's just agree to disagree here. ;)

Do you mean Aero Snap? The Window snaps to 1/4 of the screen along with 1/2 of the screen. So again, it's not like they just out right stole it. Same elements--different design. But, yeah--everyone copied that...thankfully. :D

      I was using searxng for about a year , self hosted, but results were starting to timeout and eventually it became unusable so I switched to degoog. Much better for my needs, more polished and add-ons like maps and calculations etc

      Hello, I am not as familiar with AMD CPUs as I am with Intel's, but as I understand it, that's a mid-range CPU from about three years ago.  I would think it to be fine for everyday casual-type use.  A larger SSD might be better, but with storage prices these days that's a decision that has to be carefully thought about.
