Apple hit with class action lawsuit over defective retina displays

apple-13.png

A retina MacBook Pro owner is gearing up to launch a class action lawsuit against Apple over the ghosting in his computer?s display, according to Law360. The issue broadly affects the high-resolution MacBook Pros and has been ascribed to LG-made panels, versus Samsung ones. The lawsuit accuses Apple of ?tricking? customers into buying ghosting screens by not disclosing which computer uses which make of display.

Apparently the lawsuit has been filed in California by Beau Hodges. who says that the two makes of display made by LG and Samsung respectively ?exhibit different levels of performance and quality? and claims Apple is in the wrong for advertising both displays as the same.

Do customers have a right to know when parts are used or not used or are Apple adversing the products correctly ? Will this class action go anywhere at all ?

*sigh* some people will sue over anything. Does Apples advertisement anywhere say "Will not ghost?" if not, then the user has not reason to complain. Pretty sure apple would replace faulty screens if the guy wanted.

This guy deserves a kick in the teeth for being such a whiny bitch.

So you would be happy going into an Apple store and seeing the model on display which looks crisp and nice, you get it home, switch it on and the screen starts ghosting?

The screens that have "ghosting" look crisp at nice at first, too. My first 2 retina MacBook pros looked great.. until I tested for the ghosting issue by setting a dark gray background and going to google.com and waiting for 5 minutes.

my first 2 displays were LG.. the second one developed the issue after about 5 months. Instead of swapping out notebook a second time, I took it to an authorized repair shop and showed them the issue. They agreed that it shouldn't do that and they ordered a replacement display for me and installed it. The new display is a Samsung model and does not exhibit these problems.

A friend of mine recently purchased a retina macbook pro after the spec bump and she also got a samsung screen... makes me wonder if Apple dropped LG as a display supplier for these machines due to the issue. I don't blame these people for being angry. A $100 lcd you got from office depot isn't likely to have that problem.. there's no excuse for the display (and main selling point) of a $2200 to $2800 computer to have a problem like this.

Didn't say I would be happy, but I wouldn't go all sue crazy. I would take it back and demand a replacement.

Shame on LG for providing such low quality panels. I don't think it's Apple's fault, unless they knew about the ghosting and still decided to go ahead with them.

Steve Jobs would have made a lot of fuss over this (he cared about customer satisfaction). Tim Cook seems to stay pretty quiet (perhaps he's hypnotized by a reality distortion field left behind from Jobs).

    • Glad im on the right boat. Tidal has lots of issues in terms of app and music mix, its worst than spot but its honest. Spot algo is very tendentious and they pess less to artists, so im comfortable with the tidal errors, for now.
    • Tidal won't monetize AI slop music, company says by David Uzondu Image via Tidal Tidal has announced an AI policy aimed at protecting artists and their crafts, as AI music generation tools continue to improve both in speed and quality. According to the music streaming platform, AI-generated music will be accepted, but these tracks will be held to a "higher standard" of content integrity. Next month, the company plans to auto-identify and tag these uploads. Listeners will spot a special icon next to content that algorithms flag as 100% AI-generated starting mid-July, and the platform hopes to expand this tag to partially generated songs as detection tech improves. Any AI music that exploits an artist's voice or likeness will be taken down, and Tidal will immediately block tracks associated with fraudulent activity, which includes artificial streaming and deceptive content that interferes with real creators. And finally, music that's 100% AI-generated will not be monetized. Tidal said there is "ongoing debate" about whether certain licensed synthetic models deserve payouts, so it's possible that this part will change in the future. Streaming platforms are absolutely getting flooded with AI-generated music because of how easy it is to pump out endless tracks every minute. To give you an idea of how "bad" it is, Deezer alone reported that synthetic uploads now make up about 44% of its daily intake, which translates to roughly 75,000 automated tracks hitting its servers every single day. Interestingly, Deezer found most people cannot tell the difference between human and machine creations, with an Ipsos study revealing that 97% of listeners failed to spot the AI-generated tracks. Spotify's CEO recently pushed back against listeners who call AI music "slop," urging people to stop using the term and instead embrace the creative potential of AI music. The Swedish platform partnered with Universal Music Group to test "legal and controlled" generative AI tools that let subscribers remix songs with AI.
