update (not restore) ipod touch4g running iOS5 to 6.1.3?

Recommended Posts

I am helping someone upgrade an ipod touch 4g to the latest iOS, but I am in a country with slow internet and the download using both iTunes and the iPod keeps failing. I managed to download the file iPod4,1_6.1.3_10B329_Restore.ipsw and found instructions on how to use it (place into specific directory tree, run iTunes and will update when device is attached). I want to ensure this will do an update, not a restore to the latest iOS as I don't want to lose all the pictures, songs, messages, etc. I am not an apple user so I don't want to take any chances. Advice would be appreciated.

Don't quote me on this but as far as I know you need something called "make_noerase_ipsw_r1" to mod the ipsw into upgrade only mode .. and then you need to pick that file in iTunes to "restore" from. I do not remember the key combination for iTunes that lets you pick your own restore files.

Knowledge: Had a 4s stuck in reboot loop and was about to flash it after 24 hours. It magically turned on again by itself ... Most forums were not helpful in regards to upgrade without loosing your files etc since the most common apple solution is to send it in  .

So whilst I didn't try this method .. I would have gone ahead and done it.
