neufuse Veteran Posted April 24, 2013 Veteran Share Posted April 24, 2013 I'm sorry, but we are wasting money on studies like this? Scientist says Fred Flintstone's car sits on wheels made of lies Kyle Hill, a Scientific American contributor, has turned his big brain toward one of life's biggest mysteries: How does Fred Flintstone stop his car using nothing but his feet? Hill estimates that Flintstone's rockmobile weighs 1,980 pounds (and that Fred himself is a stout 210 pounds) and can travel at a top speed of 25 mph. He initially assumes that Fred's feet are thickly callused enough to be used as brakes, but doesn't think that's a realistic assessment. "The worst case is much more likely," Hill says. "If Fred pressed and held his feet to the ground, he would most likely lose them." Well, that pretty much killed our appetite for a bronto burger. http://now.msn.com/fred-flintstone-couldnt-have-stopped-his-car-with-his-feet

Original Poster
Someone take away his PhD and give it to someone who can use it to do some work that will actually forward humanity. there is no such thing as a stupid question ... so why should someone be judge for answering any question, even if it may not benefit you? sounds like you are just being selfish ;)

Hill should turn his big brain toward important things.

rfirth
Someone take away his PhD and give it to someone who can use it to do some work that will actually forward humanity. If you people bothered to read, you would know that this person doesn't have a PhD. He doesn't even have a masters degree. You would also know that this is just a funny blog post and completely unrelated to his research. Denis W. 1 Share

psreloaded
As long as he did not use public/university funds while doing this research, i don't care. If he did however, he should be fired immediately from whichever university he is affiliated to... Here we have problems like global warming and cancer and he is wasting his time on flintstone!!! Lant
I'm sorry, but we are wasting money on studies like this? Because they can often provide useful insight into a problem while presenting it in a clever and engaging manner that gets others excited in the field. One of my favourite examples of this is http://arxiv.org/abs/1108.5211 which explores trying to find faster ways to board an airplane
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted April 24, 2013 Veteran Share Posted April 24, 2013 For starters, who "wasted the money"? Was he being employed to write the blog post (And if so, how much was he paid? because it's just a couple of calculations) And second, what's the objection anyway? If a company employed him to write the article for whatever reason, why does that affect you? Draconian Guppy 1 Share

zhangm Supervisor Posted April 24, 2013 Supervisor Share Posted April 24, 2013 I'm sorry, but we are wasting money on studies like this? The conclusion of my rapid "study" is that you don't know that this isn't actually the author's funded research. The author's actual areas of research are briefly mentioned at the end of the blog post. Also, the title is wrong - this is a scientist making a statement, not "scientists" declaring the results of an actual research study.
