Game Informer: Dualshock 4 prototype hands-on

Recommended Posts

Dualshock 4 prototype hands-on (some new in-depth info, some we already knew):

- Some components are still being refined (like the d-pad and overall weight)

- Deadzone on the analog sticks has been greatly reduced.

- Both sticks feature stiffer resistance.

- Thumbs bumping into each other is no longer an issue, the analog sticks are spaced farther apart.

- Analog sticks have a ridged concave top that prevent your thumbs from slipping off.

- Stuck with symmetrical design because the assymetrical design would cause more dificulties to interact with the touchpad without unintentionally bumping into the left stick.

- Touchpad is multi-touch, replaces start and select buttons.

- Ridge at the end of the triggers grasps at your fingers instead of letting them slide off.

- There is a small speaker above the ps button, below the touchpad.

- Lightbar works in conjunction with the ps4 eye to track your position and adjusts the split screen accordingly.

- Controller felt comfortable and sturdy.

- Got input from Bungie (and a bunch of first party studios) for designing the DS4, Bungie really wanted to make it a controller that worked great for fps games.

- Writer of the article says the controller is a big reason for gamers to be excited for the console.

Sounds like a great improvement!

Replacing Start and Select buttons with a touch-screen could be a little bit annoying because who likes to look a the controller every time when we have to select something. Other than that everything looks great.

The touchpad has a resolution of 1920x800, so I'm sure it'll just come down to pushing it at left for select, right for start.

Two completely contradictory statements. Seems like Bungie lost the argument.

Certainly agree. The "Share" and "Options" buttons should be on the touch screen instead - the "Start" and "Select" buttons should have stayed right where they were.

Never once had this issue, and I have rather large hands.

Seriously who the hell was having this issue? The Hulk?

I am having a hard time grasping how this is going to work, guess will see it in action. But I have gotten very adept at not looking at pressing either the start or select button as I am sure any regular users have, so hoping it is not to different with the touchpad, which I just have mixed feelings about overall TBH. Almost feel it will be to small to be effective and will just wind up being one button.

I LOL'd..

They seemed to good controllers.. I much prefer these to play NCAA games over the Xbox.. but prefer the xbox controller for racing games..

Favorite controller was the Wavebird :D

All of these things are a non issue.

Play Katamari Forever and see :p

In that game it's because of how you need to rotate both analog sticks. If you pick up a DS3 just now, and push the left stick all the way to the right, and the right stick all the way to the left your thumbs may be touching.

Or alternatively rotate one stick fast counter clockwise, and the other fast clockwise, there's a lot of that in Katamari.

Not really a widespread issue though, most games do not need such control input.

Has anyone also considered that start/select may somehow be combined now? Or pushing the touchpad brings up a new kind of menu? It's also only touch, not display to clarify.

Couldn't disagree more!

My guess its to justify its newly implemented touchpad because of its given size. If the touchpad was any smaller then it would be awkward to use most likely.

I AM THE HULK! HULK SMASH!

No seriously... I constantly have this issue with games that require quick movements on both sticks. I have long fingers and thumbs though, where as plenty of friends have never had the issue.

I always hated the Dual Shock.

This new dual shock looks better imo. I'm looking forward to try it but stiffer resistance and ridged concave top are definately a welcome change. Shoulder buttons look far better too.

I don't think next gen the Dual Shock will be a reason i avoid the playstation 4.

    • If you have a TV in your living room, chances are you can probably just use the Steam Link app and play your huge PC in big picture mode, effectively giving you the Steam Machine experience to see if you'd actually like it. The good news is the Steam Machine can have it's drives upgraded. It has a USB-C 10Gbs port as well, so the 512GB drive could be quickly moved to an external enclosure and repurposed.
    • This machine could very well be a second gaming PC for their living room as a console experience. So we would have to assume their main PC exists as well; With that said, I have 10gb home network with a 2.5gigabit internet connection here so we tend to have more than enough speed to download games. However, we can't make use of the 10gb LAN using Steam's built in transfer tool because it always compresses transfers and that slows the transfer down to well below a standard gigabit port speeds, sometimes as slow as 200-300Mb/s transfers. While that's probably still faster than most internet connections anyway, if they'd fix the LAN transfer issue it'd be upto x5 faster even on a gigabit LAN, than simply dropping a 2.5gbe port on there with hopes of a few people having fast internet connections. There are solutions, work arounds, like using LANCache if you run a NAS... or simply copying the files over manually using a network share.
    • Samsung announces ultra-fast UFS 5.0 storage to supercharge mobile AI by Paul Hill Local AI models tend to run a lot more slowly than cloud services like Claude and Gemini; however, Samsung has just announced that it has developed its UFS 5.0 solution, which increases data transfer to speeds of 10.8GB/s, enabling faster storage and processing in mobile memory that has the potential to provide more optimal local AI experiences. Commenting on this development, Jangseok Choi, head of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, said: If you’ve tried local AI, you’ll know it can be quite slow, especially if using the larger parameter models. By developing this new solution, Samsung says that storage is evolving from just storing data to a core piece of infrastructure that supports AI computation, too. The Korean company said that UFS 5.0 integrates the latest embedded memory interface standard from JEDEC and achieves up to 10.8 gigabytes per second (GB/s) transfer speeds. Regarding write speeds, Samsung UFS 5.0 can reach 9.5 GB/s. Both the read and write speeds are twice as fast as those of the previous UFS 4.1 standard. Aside from being ideal for local AI, Samsung’s UFS 5.0 is more power efficient by 40% compared to UFS 4.1. Samsung achieved this by implementing innovations such as clock gating and multi-voltage technologies. UFS 5.0 is also ultra-compact at just 7.5mm x 13mm x 0.9mm; that is 16.7% smaller than UFS 4.1. The company said it will be bringing it to multiple devices in the future, including mobile, wearable, and extended reality.
    • A bit like the steamdeck, this probably isn't for you.
    • Gamers Nexus already did their review, and building your own will be faster and cheaper, so not very convincing.
