FiB3R
What OS were you running on your old PC? I googled hpfs... HPFS is only supported under Windows NT versions 3.1, 3.5, and 3.51. Windows NT 4.0 cannot access HPFS partitions Could this be the issue?
Som
you could try this software: http://www.z-a-recovery.com , works for me but not in all situations, some hard drives are just not recoverable... ignore that, i didn't read the HPFS bit.... Barney T. Administrators Posted June 29, 2013 Administrators Share Posted June 29, 2013 Or boot up with a Linux Live CD (such as an Ubuntu CD/DVD) and remove your valuable data to a USB flash drive......... The Ubuntu Live CD is a free download and once you burn the ISO you boot it up from the CD and it goes straight to memory, not affecting the hard drive at all. You can boot it up, use the file manager to navigate to your hard disk files and copy / paste them to your flash drive. Voila. Done (Y) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_CD http://livecdlist.com/ I have done this more times than I can remember and it works great! Noir Angel
You often get a drive partition labelled as HPFS/NTFS, but it's nothing to worry about, unless your OS was REALLY old the drive won't be HPFS, it's just the way some software denotes NTFS. When you transfer a hard drive from an old PC to a new PC Windows has to reconfigure itself for the new PC and this wasn't something that XP handled all that well, sometimes it will not re-configure itself correctly and in that case your only option will be a fresh install. Back up your data using a live Linux CD as Barney suggested then format all of your disks and reinstall Windows, for the most stable operation you'll always want a clean install when you migrate to a new PC.
