Android Nears 80% Market Share In Global Smartphone Shipments

Recommended Posts

Android smartphone shipments grew a whopping 73.5 percent between the second quarter of 2012 and Q2 2013, according to research firm IDC?s latest numbers. 187.4 million Android-powered phones shipped in the most recent quarter, representing 79.3 percent of all smartphones shipped during the quarter. The next closest smartphone platform was iOS, which shipped just 31.2 million units, accounting for 13.2 percent of overall share.

Apple?s mobile OS still blew away its next closest competitor (and still grew 20 percent in terms of device shipments year over year), Windows Phone, which saw 8.7 million handsets shipped for 3.7 percent share of the global market. But Windows Phone also experienced growth at roughly the same rate, with shipments overall climbing 77.6 percent year over year. BlackBerry, predictably, hurt the worst of the major players, dropping from 4.9 percent overall share to just 2.9 percent, and shipping 11.7 percent fewer devices than during the same time last year.

What?s causing the big Android bump IDC says the Samsung Galaxy S4 was a strong driver, but LG, Huawei, Lenovo and ZTE also had really good quarters with shipments in the double digits. The Android platform represented a win for almost everyone playing in that sandbox, however, as even small manufacturers saw success targeting small, niche markets in developing countries with affordable smartphones.

Windows Phone owes almost all of its growth to Nokia, which accounted for 81.6 percent of all smartphones shipped based on Microsoft?s mobile platform during the quarter. BlackBerry hit a new all-time low, in terms of IDC?s history of tracking market share. IDC says not to count them out because of BB10 progress, but it?s no secret that things are looking grim for the Canadian smartphone pioneer.

The big takeaway here is pretty clear, in terms of the top two players: Android is on fire because of choice, availability and price point in emerging markets focused on shifting to smartphones from feature phones on limited budgets. That means it?s even more crucial to watch what Apple debuts this fall in terms of a low-cost iPhone device, which is rumored to be based around the iPhone 5 and sport a plastic back that?s cheaper to produce.

I am not surprised. You can get an Android phone in any price range these days. That's the key to its success.

WTF. Galaxy S4 is not driving this 80% share, it's the likes of Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Y etc.

It says it was a strong driver.  And  considering the amount the S4 has sold, it is a strong player.I doubt much of the other Galaxy models are really registering that much.  If they were, we would be hearing sales numbers on those as well.

hey.. remember when people here were calling me nuts when i said that iOS will be at 10-15% marketshare if they are lucky by this time and that Android will be at 80%?

I guess they are feeling pretty freakin' stupid right about now.   :D

Android is the future for the next decade (at least).. it's only just starting.. Android will be in everything we use.

No one had any idea that Android would be this big. I love Android and I doubted too. I've read somewhere where Android now has a larger install base than Windows.  :o

I absolutely did.. and have said it many times .. at that time iPhone was destroying the smartphone market with almost 50% marketshare.. Android was at like 2.1%

When I said that by before 2015 (as it was actually estimated by analysts) Android will be 75-80% and that iOS will be at 10-15% if Apple is lucky (niche like Macs were in Windows world).. you should have seen the responses and garbage I was getting.. OMG.. calling me crazy, a troll etc..

Well I guess we see now.

Btw, I also said that Android tablets will destroy iPads.. and I think it's obvious how that's ending up as well. but the responses again I got from folks here were just off the hook.

Whoever is frequenting Neowin knows exactly what my stands and opinions were as I have repeated them over the years.. I guess most people are silent now cause they realize I was right (not just me.. there were a few others here as well who said the same thing)

not true. windows installed base is like 1.4 billion, and the last android figures said 900 million activated, which doesnt even mean 900m in use,so if you bought an android phone 4 years ago, then upgraded 2 years ago and dumped the first one, and then upgraded again this year and dumped the last one, that would mean you activated three, but only count as one in installed base.

Well, Android really has no cause to worry right now.  But that doesnt keep them from pulling out all the stops and new ideas.  Look at Samsung, the S4 is selling well.  All these no name companies pumping out crap products does help the market share, but it isnt as much as some would like to claim or else we would hear more about it.  Its the bigger  companies...Samsung, LG, HTC, Huawei, and ZTE that are making this happen and is why  they are consistently listed in market share results.  Apple needs to keep an eye on WP since they could get the jump on them if they are not careful.

What I find funny is that anti Android people claim, or used to claim, that android fragmentation is a big deal and is going to hurt Android.  Fact is, and what I have said countless times before, is most people do not care of know what version of the OS they are on.

But anyway, will be interesting to see how things change when the cheap iPhones hit the market.

Sure seems that way.
