New drug mimics the beneficial effects of exercise

The Scripps Research Institute has developed a drug that duplicates the benefits of exercise ? at least for mice (Photo: Shutterstock)

A drug known as SR9009, which is currently under development at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), increases the level of metabolic activity in skeletal muscles of mice. Treated mice become lean, develop larger muscles and can run much longer distances simply by taking SR9009, which mimics the effects of aerobic exercise. If similar effects can be obtained in people, the reversal of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and perhaps Type-II diabetes might be the very welcome result.

The drug was developed by Professor Thomas Burris of TSRI, who found that it was able to reduce obesity in populations of mice. It binds to and activates a protein called Rev-ErbA?, which influences fat and sugar burning in the liver, production of fat cells, and he body's inflammatory response.

They're working on it: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-20024046-10391704.html

i just think it's funny when another study comes out which says, "look what we can do to mice!" as though it's just a minor tweak to get it working in humans.

For a lot of things, it IS just a minor tweak. That's why they use mice.

Not quite true. It's very easy to genetically alter mice, and they are genetically similar to humans, so it's easy to say, give a thousand mice a cancer which affects humans and run tests on them. Getting that research into humans is a very different, very large, gap.

It's very easy to do a lot of wacky things to mice, or other small mammals (see the glow in the dark rabbits from last week, or any mice which have been genetically altered to be flawed), but going from that to human testing to full on human production is an entirely different story.

Thats amazing, a new way of people thinking they can get away with not excercising.... its pathetic. So people will think they can just sit on the arses take a tablet and think theyve done a 6 mile run. 1 of the things excercise does is change your mood cus your out of the house breathing in fresh air etc. i know this tablet alongside anti-depressants, = total win obviously

So if I take this drug and exercise does my Liver explode?

Also I'd be far more interested in the tablet that allows Mice to live to 80 :) This whole 'dying' thing needs to get sorted.
