Phonebloks, modular cellular phone concept

I found this on youtube and it looks like a logical step in mobile technology solutions if the industry can agree to interoperate in a meaningful way to help curb the creation of e-waste.

Its a great concept, but I fear that's all it'll ever be. Most companies are far more concerned with getting our cash from the sale of a new handset than just the odd upgrade.

Design could do with a bit of work as well.

I fear the same thing, and it's a massive shame, seems like a great idea. 

 

Samsung are moving a little in that direction with their modular packs for their TVs so who knows, it start of with smaller upgrades.

The problem I'm seeing with the concept (although it's just a concept) is that they are showing how you can give more room to whatever part of the phone you are more interested in, but it's shown as a tradeoff. If you were willing to buy the best possible components for every bit of capability they just wouldn't fit on the board.

 

And then you'd have to be playing tetris every time you bought an upgrade  :/
