Chocolate Meltdown: World to Run Out of Cocoa by 2020

Recommended Posts

I was saying capitalism of foreign markets is killing cocoa. They choose to grow rubber and quinoa rather than cheap cocoa because it earns them more take-home money. I wasn't saying the US, EU, Australian, Canadian  or whatever '1st world' capitalist economies are losing so much money on it they are pushing for more profitable rubber or quinoa... pretty sure they still make their healthy cut regardless of what they sell the consumer. Capitalists are likely rejoicing at the amount of money they can squeeze out of the thought of no cocoa.

It is same for Tequila, the agave cactus it is made from is being dismissed in favour of corn, because the US demand for corn is high...    The big deal is, it takes a few years before yield, so it will be hard to restore. Which farmer wants to replant a crop and have no gain for a few years? Very few have this luxury! Replacing agave with corn was easy...   Going back is not.

The USA will invade Brazil, enslave the people, and plant massive cocoa plantations.

essential facts:

Bats and small insects called midges pollinate cocoa flowers. Flowers die in 24 hours if they are not pollinated, according to All About Chocolate. Cocoa trees flower all year long, even while cocoa pods develop.

I'm starting a Chocoholics Anonymous group.

"Hi my name is <insert name> and I am a chocolate addict"

"I used to eat 2 Milky Ways, a Snickers, 5 Mounds and drink a quart of chocolate milk everyday in secret. And on a really bad day 2 0r 3 large bags of M&Ms. It was shameful."    "Now I just have sex...a lot of sex, any time any place."

I don't like chocolate so, I don't care.

Hopefully the same will happen to tobacco and coffee plants, don't like them either too.

"They warned we would need the ?equivalent of another planet Earth to fill the gap needed to keep the chocolate ?industry going."

Exaggerate much? This sounds like one of those sensationalist tabloid stories... oh wait it is.

Source: Daily Star

You're right. Let's turn our economies in communist ones. It's not like they have any issues...

You know there's something in between pure capitalist and pure communist ...
