On my old Xperia Mini Pro I used to just have to hold down on an empty space and I'd get the option to either change the background or add widgets such as buttons to turn of Wifi or widgets for various apps I have installed, with my Memo Pad I just get the option to change the background, so how do I add widgets?

Are you on Android 4.0-4.3? If so then just simply go to the Apps Menu and go all the way over to the right (or just tap Widgets) at the top of that menu and bam.

Look in the app drawer, there should be a widgets tab.

Go to the apps drawer and either scroll to the right all the way past your apps, or there will be a tab at the top that allows you to switch between your apps and your widgets. Tap and hold the widget you want and it will allow you to place it where you want on your home screen.

Edit: ninja'd twice :p

For the record: In stock Android 4.4 'KitKat' widgets are added in roughly the same way as on your old Xperia.
