WHY am I getting so many popups!?!?!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

You and I both know that the application landscape is changing. The fact that companies are now offering trusted stores for customers to download and install software is a huge benefit to users.

A trusted store isn't the issue here. The issue is what the user wants to install... You can't tell the user that they can't install the Facebook Smiley Pack...

I'm not a fan of this mess, I have to deal with it too often on my relatives machines, but I also wouldn't support losing the option to install it. I don't care for MS to tell me what I can and can't have on my machine and I'm sure most here would agree with that.

Antiviruses rarely detect that garbage because they're considered "legit" programs (some of those hijack downloads redirecting users to setups of similar garbage apps, hijack browser pages for banners or autoinstall more crapware in background yet that's considered acceptable by AV companies because "the EULA says so").

The first thing I do is setting Adobe Flash to autoupdate and installing FFox + Adblock + PublicFox blocking all EXE downloads. A simple, permanent solution. No more crapware to clean after that. Also if I set mail accounts I install a desktop client and never give the users the password, I set up SMS recovery instead. That fixes stolen mail passwords because they won't know what to input on all those bogus phishing pages.

So you're in favor of converting all of computing into an iOS style model? Where whole categories of applications can't be created because someone could abuse the API...

If Microsoft ever goes that closed on the desktop they'll cease to exist.

isn't windows only their 3rd biggest business? If windows disappeared this instant, im pretty sure Microsoft would still be raking in billions.

appmarket toolbar, bun it done it, remove it.

Some rogue free-ware installed something similar without my permission. it was like being back on windows 95 and trying shareware again.

I went to eBay, specific eBay ads, Went to amazon.co.uk, specific amazon ads, I didn't go anywhere, pop-up after pop-up.

I was vexed.

She said they even made me pay $70. I asked "Made you?" she said , ya after I installed that Adobe reader this registry cleaner appeared saying I had all of these errors and that I had to pay $70 to fix it. I thought once I paid all my problems would go alway". So she said "She gave them her card number" I asked if she gave them a debit or a credit, she "Thinks" debit.

Unfortunately, I think some sort of global ethics committee is needed, a lot of those ads are deceptive, or at the very least, misleading

I don't have a problem with the ads, but they should be as specific as tv or radio (and not one thing to hide another, so to speak)

What pisses me off to no end is when I'm trying to help someone over the phone and they keep entering web addresses in some damned search bar!

People are illiterate because they have not been taught that there are crooks, scammers ready to steal them.

Warwagon should be praised that he is repairing computers and teaching users.

Sadly true.

I put adobe flash in Google.

First link: T?l?charger Flash Player? - flash-playing.com?, adobe-flashplayer.flash-playing.com/?

Second link: Adobe - Installer Adobe Flash Player, get.adobe.com/fr/flashplayer/?

How non savvy people can figure the good one?

I usually backup all their data in safe mode, format and restore from a clean, up to date, Windows image. Fastest way possible to deal with this.

Had a customer call me today because she was trying to submit something to a government website,  but they only accept IE9 and Firefox. They don't accept IE 10, IE 11 or Chrome.

So she called me because she need to install Firefox. She was going to go looking for it but got scared and called me.

So i'm thinking "OH GOD, you go looking for it and you are going to end up with a bunch of crap on your system."

Well turns out she already did go looking for it and acquired

Chromium

Unchecky (Yep! Adware installs it)

Extended update

Drivercure

Weatherbug.

and still didn't have Firefox.
